Autos don't like to be root bound. Nor over fertilized, nor over watered. Beyond that....they have their own cruise control.

In a really good soil mix & 3 gal pots, I suspect that 70 day autoflowers would go seed to harvest like gangbusters on water alone, maybe a few doses of aerated EWC tea. Blumats would make that even better.
The little darlings will grow & flower explosively when conditions are right. |

So I'm the only one who thinks 4-5 gallons minimum? Have any of you recommending 3 gallons done side by sides with 5+? What's your light schedule? I do 24/0, and the bigger I've gone the happier I've been. I start in largest pot possible to, preferably finishing pot. Id love to put a bed into one of my rooms and direct seed some and see what I can do.

If you have 12 in 3 gallons now bumping them to five is like 2 more bags of soil, like 40$. An extra q from all combined more then pays that, and I bet you'd actually get quite a bit more for the tiny investment and effort.

Some smaller autos only require 2.5- 3 gallon containers. 5 and we've even grown in 7 gallon containers...plants are happy.

Based on my limited experience, repotting is much more harmful to AF strains than photoperiod strains. Start them with at least a 2 liter container and repot no more than once.
Anything much larger than a 5 gallon bucket is probably overkill unless it is known to be an exceptionally large autoflower strain (4+ feet). AF plants simply have less time to grow roots than photoperiod strains. When it comes to nutes, I err on the side of caution. Use rich soil and use light ferts, but carefully. If you want the most out of AF's every day of growth every day needs to be ideal. However, a plant with a moderate nute deficiency will ultimately do better than one that suffers even mild nute burn. It is crazy easy to grow organic AF weed. Start with an organic soil, add light organic nutes when prudent.Ignore anything but moderate to severe nute deficiencies, Wait 60 days and chop. When dealing with small pots, yield and pot size are directly correlated. Use the largest container you can fit in your grow space. But i'm no expert that's just my 2 cents. |

On my current grow my autos got root bound in 1.5gal pots, I transferred to 4 gal square pots, One girl who was in flower took very well alothough didn't grow to the size of expect from a 4 gal pot, the 2nd on was a short stocky thing that stayed in veg for 6 week. In the future I shall be seeding straight into 4 or 5 gal pots just because it makes sense with autos
