Depends if indoors/outdoors, average size at harvest. Have seen some astounding autos in Big Gulp cups.
We use 2-5 gallon size, depending if super auto or large or wanting to keep covert.

Autos do great in 3 gal pots w/ good organic soil & regular feeding. As fast growers & flowerers, they're quite hungry.

There wqas a comment on this site several years ago where the writer discussed his experiments with different size/shape containers for autos. He concluded that the plants were strongly affected by the roots reaching the bottom of the containers, causing growth to radically slow down. Container width didn't seem that important. He found good results growing his autoflowers in the long narrow Treepots.

I have grown tons of autos and it really depends on strain an auto extreme will dwarf a 15-20l pot how ever a fast bud be happy in a pot at 6l. At the mo most non mega yielding strains will do well in a 10-12l ish size pot

I'm more than happy with a standard round 12-15 liter pot ...er thats 3 us gallon here, plant the seed direct to the pot, and not so much nute either,...see for yourself at harvest how small the rootzone is...
