where did the Auto genes come from?
Hello all,
I have a question, what was used to make all the current Autos? Not the dope side, the auto low or no THC side that is used. It originally was Ruderalis from Hungary 25 years ago that people made autos from, I have heard that Finola is being used today, or other Ruderalis from other countries? Anyone know? Who made the new Autos recently in the last 5-10 years? I just want to know what plants from where they used to make drug varieties Auto. Thanks, -SamS |

Back in 2006, ventured through parts of Portugal picking up a few unknown strains there, reputed to be ruderalis. Worked with them a few years and hybridized as well.
Then late summer 2011, hiking along SW Colorado terrain(San Juan Mountains), came across small but abundant patch of 'wild' cannabis. Growing it out (wasn't potent, but had the fast maturing quality)We've used that 'patch' hybridizing with a friend's auto genes from Palmer region of Alaska. Plan to return to the wilderness vicinity to scout out more in the area in late July where we first discovered the plants, hopefully reap more for future projects. Have read, depending on what region (Europe, Russia, China, North America) there are wild untamed strains that have the ruderalis traits or are true c. ruderalis. Have seen nice pics of Czech wild cannabis here and on other forums...so ruderalis is everywhere! 'Ditch weed' in the Midwest...recall seeing it growing along rail road tracks near my aunt/uncle's place around Indiana/Ohio border...and seemed to grow without others broadcasting/planting. I would consider that ruderalis....or government plots that grew, the plant decades ago which morphed/acclimated/reproduced. We've used those mentioned- the Colorado wild ruderalis and earlier strains from Bragança and Ifanes areas in Portugal hybrizing with current strains. As surmised, Joint Doctor, JD, w/ Low Ryder, others with Williams Wonder have developed strains which are the foundation of many auto strains today. More being hybridized as we speak.

yeah I think it was a guy called the joint doctor, I met him at the uk hemp expo I think it was 2008 i might be wrong. I think he started breeding at university however he wasn't very forthcoming with info when I spoke to him. He seemed more businessman than plant breeder if you know what I mean.

In Canada for sure the Mighty Mite strain is the most common ancestor of autoflowers; it is supposedly derived from a himalayan strain. I have smoked the pure and though it is not particularly potent pretty sure it did not come from a hemp strain.. it is prob at least 3-4% thc. Also the structure is very short and squat; way more hash planty than hemp imo

The consumption of 2.5mg to 5mg of CBN has the same level of sedation as a mild pharmaceutical sedative, with a relaxed body sensation similar to 5mg to 10mg of diazepam. CBN is synergistic with both CBD and D9THC for inducement of sleeping, and when mixed in the correct ratios, CBN becomes an effective sleep aid of 5-6 hours duration." |

Other than Aridbud's efforts, I believe modern autoflowers descend from Lowrider, White Dwarf & Mighty Mite. The origins of the autoflowering genes probably come from Eastern Europe or from feral hemp varieties that managed to adapt to short seasons. At least, that's what I get from reading, anyway. It may be an inherent recessive trait in hemp varieties encouraged by natural selection. The truth is lost in myth & legend like a lot of other cultivars.
There may be some original work going on with finola. |

Thanks, Jhhnn for the acknowledgement of our work.
It's region dependent. There's ruderalis all over the planet. We chose to use the Colorado and the European ruderalis in our poly-hybrids...not just crossing commercial strains from other breeders. Those are in the mix, but not total. That keeps us from 'copying' genes. Plus numerous phenos arise from the poly-hybrids as well.
