CBD Lullaby preservation Q?

Greetings Chimera and all...I have just placed my pack of CBD lullaby into the dirt this morning, and have some questions regarding the best way to preserve the line. I will keep a mother or mothers that please me the most...but I tend to get a bit busy with other things, and the tending of mothers eventually becomes too much a PITA. Never kept one much more than a year or so.

So, my question is what is the best way to preserve the line in seed form? My punnets are quite rusty, and the genetics side of horticulture has never been my strength. I see problems with the choosing of a male or males, and determining the contributions he will make to the mix...was also thinking selfing the most pleasing fems, but can also envision some issues in this direction. So, some insight on the best approach would be greatly appreciated.

I also bought the Frankie's hype, and have a pack to run after the lullaby grow...really hoping for something tropical, energetic and happy!

Cheers!

It's a good question. I have been curious about CBD variety preservation too, as I'm unsure how the CBD gene tends to operate and whether there are multiple alleles or not (I get the impression yes).

Bump...

Still would like to hear some insights on this...

Altho, I am not feeling too good about this seed line so far.
6/10 germination, and rather poor seedling vigor have disappointed. They are about a week away from being able to take cuts of everything before I flower...but six individuals is no great way to try and preserve a line.

I have heard the quotes of some claiming it good medicine. I hope there is at least one helpful fem amongst the 6.

As I understand it, CBD varieties (F1 hybrids) are quite difficult to continue through to an F2 if the parents were initially bred for high THC content. An example is Cannatonic; this hybrid shows individuals that are high in thc or cbd and many variants in-between. I can't comment on the breeding of the Lullaby since Chi might of done it differently but I think if you make an F2 generation you'll find a lot of variation and not all high in cbd...

If you want to continue a line then I would suggest germinating at least 20-30 seeds and to do an open pollination using all males. Or collect pollen from all males and use on cuttings of select females. 10 seeds isn't enough IMO to find a good female to continue a line. Open pollination using many males is a great tool in preserving all traits but is only viable if you want to look through many individuals in the F2.. Also, if the hybrid you're starting with isn't a true F1 from stable parents (I have no idea if Lullaby is a true F1), and is instead a multiple hybrid, then the second generation will be extremely variable...

Chyna -

Ive found my lullaby x jacks to be slow to veg and slow to clone. Jahaze's lullaby X blockhead seem to be slow growers too. I suppose the slow growth comes from the lullaby mom.

Nevertheless its great medicine (and turning out to be a decent yielder). Ill bring the camera out and take some pics over the next couple days got some in week 8 right now.

Kal- thanks for your feedback...what you state is pretty much what I have been thinking, and hence my asking for some insights. I hear you on the seed numbers, but budgets and a deep seated revulsion for paying $7 per seed (I work in commercial horticulture, and plant seed is just not, and should not be that expensive; but this is more a problem of tyrannical, criminal government

Krausen - thanks as well, looking forward to seeing what you are growing.

I just potted them up, and there are 3 fems, and 3 males, one of which is slightly mutant, and will prolly be tossed. I am going to incross what I have, and look through the F2. Will also hit a bunch of other high THC fems I have outside, and work some into some of the autoflower lines that I keep.

My ultimate suggestion would be (and some might not like this) to germ 20 seed, discard the males, and use two or three best females to make female seed. I'm not talking about an S1 generation which would be reversing a chosen female on itself but reversing a good female on two other females. This way you can chose three females that have differing traits and use the best as a pollen donor by reversing it to pollinate the other two. The result, an all female generation, will show (hopefully) all the traits you've seen in the plants you've picked (unless the pollen donor is heavily dominant for traits) and give you good seed for a while.

For the space you have etc this might be the way to go. It isn't perfect though and breeding past that initial first female generation might lead to some weird expressions. In small spaces this might lead to at least having a lot of seed for the foreseeable future (as long as they're kept well).

If you don't like the idea of fem seeds them the open pollination using regular seed is the way to go. It's more work and picking the parents can be tricky...

By the way, my breeding knowledge is far from perfect and there are many threads and members that can help further your knowledge of carrying on a line. Just make sure you choose a good teacher or thread, there are a lot of funny ideas and opinions floating around which I think are pretty shoddy practice.
