i have one more question. when i water the mix the first time do i need to use liquid karma like they refer to in the lc's mix? i just went thru the post you referred to good read and helpful. i have exactly what your mix calls for. i have the ffof instead of vermifire you referred to. amazon confused me a bit on there site they have a bioag vam endo and a bioag vam. so when i received them it was the same thing. but i got a hold of t and j and received what i needed.

peace

Got ya. Just wanted you to see the difference in how I suggest using things vs what accepted science of using things says...for no other purpose than to give you a choice about how you approach things.

You CAN we the soil down with something like LK - but I'd suggest using a lactobacillus. Sort of serving the same purpose...one just being cheaper and more effective than the other.

EM1 states it is water, 3% molasses, and 1% lactic acid bacteria + yeast + phototropic bacteria (light sensitive bacteria that utilize carbon)...

So, essentially, it is water, a few bacteria and their initial sustaining food sources. Lactobacillus is just one of a group of bacterias identified as Lactobacillales.

Making your own would certainly be possible and perhaps more cost effective - however - if you have EM1, you can probably go ahead and use that per their recommendations for applications to compost.

To get a better concept of how / why this approach works to accelerate composting:

Hi Frank the fish bonemeal does it need to be steamed too? It looks like I will be making my own. Boiling the bones to remove excess tissue and air drying and then grinding.

There are lots of different products on the market for bone. Steamed is just more refined. I think it is generally 2-14-0 where other products can range from 6-9-0 to 0-10-0.

Just be sure whatever bone you use is not chuck full of nitrogen as well.

I see no reason you couldn't make your own. I imagine it will stink to high heaven though if browning egg shells is any indication.

if one was going to use crab and shrimp would it change the amount of blood and bone in your recipe. or will it just replace them at the same rate

Crab + Shrimp meal = is marketed as Crustacean Meal.

It does not have the same release rate as blood. It does not have near the nutrient density of blood or bone either. It is not as easy to come by for most farmers.

For those reasons, they certainly are not a 1:1 replacement of each other. You'd certainly have to adjust the ratios or the entire mix if you change anything about it.
