Well, if you are using Phillthy's mix - are you just referring to the base medium - because there is a certainly sufficient minerals in the basic organic mix provided in the sticky.

Outside of that, you're not being very specific. What exactly is "mineral mix"?

I'd take my base soil mix/amendment mix and make a 1.5cu ft batch of soil to use in place of the FFOF in Phillthy's mix...and then I'd amended according to the basic organic mix listed on the same sticky.

So....final mix would look something like:

Make 1.5 cu. ft:

3 gal dirt / earth / topsoil / nursery soil (unfertilized)
1.5 gal coir
2.5 gal peat
3 gal aeration (chunky perlite, lava rock, permatil, etc.)
1 gal EWC

1/2c alfalfa meal
1/2c dry molasses
1c kelp meal
1c blood meal
1c bone meal
1/2c seabird guano
2tbsp Sul-Po-Mg
1/2c azomite
1/3c dolomite
1/3c gypsum
2/3c oyster shell flour

1/4 tbsp BioVam
1/4 tbsp BioAg Vam

Then make Phillthy's base mix using the above 1.5 cu ft of soil...so it would look like this:

1/2 - bale Pro Mix Bx
1 - 1.5 cu ft of soil made above
1/2 - 30# bag EWC
5 gal additional chunky perlite

1/2c alfalfa meal
1/2c dry molasses
1c kelp meal
1c blood meal
1c bone meal
1/2c seabird guano
2tbsp Sul-Po-Mg
1/2c azomite
1/3c dolomite*
1/3c gypsum*
2/3c oyster shell flour*

1/4 tbsp BioVam
1/4 tbsp BioAg Vam

That should get you a bit better than 30 gallons per batch - and be good for full season. I personally think that the Phillthy mix can tend to dry out a bit much during full season outdoors. Much easier to manage such a light/airy mix indoors. Keeping in mind, the mix was designed by him for his personal likings...not to be a one size fits all sort of deal. I have always preferred a slightly heavier medium than Phillthy, which is why you'll notice the use of more soil than anything in my personal mix.

sorry for being so vague. i was looking at the kis formula that is close to buildasoil and they look close to what you have posted. i make enough to do 5 / 100 gallon pots. all your measurements are for 1.5 cf of medium. i like the more soil idea as my last mix seems to dry out a little fast so i will run your method. do you use the pellet guano or powder for the mix

thanks for the response nothing like learning from experienced pro's

peace

Read post #18 in this thread...answers that question and a few others.

As far as KIS or Build-a-Soil goes - I think you have to try things exactly as those guys say first - before doing any experimenting with their products / offerings. If you don't, you really have no baseline on which to form a comparison to how that program "should" perform. After establishing that baseline of familiarity it's much easier to make your own variations or adjustments as you personally see fit.

So, you are looking at the "Phillthy mix" as a base medium and then amending it with the KIS amendment kit...basically...which I'm not intimately familiar with, so I can't really comment much on the theoretical...

Other than to say, if the amendment mix is truly good it should work adequately with many various base mediums of the same volume...so, given that the total volume of the base mix Phillthy was using is about 5 cu ft.

Hope that helps.

Yep...just double it.

Obviously - There are options when working with the Phillthy mix. That 1.5 cu ft of soil, if trying to buy a bagged soil, could just as easily be 1.5 cu ft bag of Vermifire or FFOF or Roots, etc.

Mix would be:

1 - bale Pro Mix Bx
2 - 1.5 cu ft bag FFOF or equivalent
1 - 30# bag EWC
10 gal additional chunky perlite (adjustable to personal preference)

1c alfalfa meal
1c dry molasses
2c kelp meal
2c blood meal
2c bone meal
1c seabird guano
1/4c Sul-Po-Mg
1c azomite
2/3c dolomite
2/3c gypsum
4/3c oyster shell flour

1/2 tbsp BioVam
1/2 tbsp BioAg Vam

Should be around 65 gallons.

I have a silly question Frank. I just started using Phillthys base soil mix (FFOF)I love the idea of only having to water. I was wondering what kinda water Phillthy was using? (RO, city, well, ect..)
