Thanks that thread was full of great information. I think my health food store sells red clover seeds so I may try those as a living mulch. I assume coco coir chips would make a good mulch but I am leaning towards red clover or micro clover of some kind.

Clover, alfalfa, beans, peas, peanuts, and many other things are legumes. Legumes work symbiotically with certain strains of microbes that take N from the air and put it in plant usable form in nodules on the roots. I wouldn't want them for cover crops after about the 2nd week of bloom. You can grow with them, uproot them at flip, then plant a non legume like Barley for during bloom. Good luck. -granger

It's not. Most people use it the whole cycle. Just get some of that with some hay. Clover works best from my reading. I use a dead mulch tho. Leaves, coco chunks, with crab meal, insect frass, and langbeinite. Works great and no mowing your cover crop with scissors.

Barley is not specific to bloom. I was just stating my preference, since I want better control of N during bloom. Barley's great from start to finish. -granger

I used barley on several separate occasions... ended up like this guy every other day...

I like chia and marigolds for pollen sources for my predator insects and various clovers.
I leave the clover mixed with brown straw and leave it full time to keep up the rhizosphere. the clovers have similar needs and root exudes so they maintain similar conditions below the soil surface.
