Microsoft is calling saying my computer has a virus?

I've gotten a call from Microsoft the day after upgrading to comcasts new wireless modem stating their local (insert local city) server is pinging that my computer has a virus. I told them this was too weird because I don't know how they got my number. They said my phone number is taken when you purchase a computer. He wanted me to get on my computer and do something to prove the call was legit by showing me he knew my IP address. I refused and told him he was fear mongering me into purchasing virus software and told him never to call again. They call in a weekly basis at the same time the past three weeks insisting I have a virus that is causing harm to their servers.

This has gotta be a scam but how did they get my info and could it be directly linked to me being forced to upgrade my equipment? Anyone else getting these calls?

i've gotten a similar call, poor english accent stating something wrong with my windows, "i'm calling from a large multinational company"... bs, funny things is I'm on mac but yeah it's a scam, they're trying to get you to state your personal info so they can use them for whatever abuse. Don't think he nescessarily had any info on you, they're just calling different number seeing if they'll get lucky

It is definitely a scam. I don't know how they got your info, probably wasn't hard. My mom gets these calls all the time, and they want her credit card number every time.

If it was me, I'd keep them on the phone for as long as possible, just to waste their time. Of course, that will be wasting MY time too, but I enjoy wasting theirs and listening to their bullshit. I ask them the stupidest questions I can think of, just to hear their crazy answers.

I have considered getting one of those air-horn thingies and blasting their eardrums. That would be fun.

there are some funny videos of the calls from these scammers on youtube. its not hard to get ur info its posted everywhere. you likely got some maleware an it sent them a response or there just fishing. the best thing is to troll the shit out of them for your pleasure as they are persistent bastards.

the best troll was a guy following his instructions but the caller cant say w he would say dablu and couldnt find his website of dablu dablu dablu . (insert website) dot com.

i rarely get these types of calls anymore lol.

good luck an have fun with it.

They call at 7:30am. It's so annoying. Maybe I'll just set the phone down and wait till they hang up. I don't know if I have the patience to lead them down a dead end path at that time of day.

They're just really convincing and make you so worried since I think the fancy tech talk confuses most people. Thanks!

I have Microsoft Essentials or whatever it's called. I'm not sure if it runs automatically.
