is veg necessary when selecting parents?

Curious if anyone goes 12/12 from seed when looking for parents? Since "drug quality" and "potency" are not anything you can "see" (DJ Short, Subcool, Ringo, et al), wouldn't the objective be to "see" (with your lungs) asap? Aka producing flowers asap?

I realize the debate about whether 12/12 f.s. affects potency is on going. Out of those who believe 12/12 f.s. DOES NOT affect potency - are you guys growing parents 12/12 f.s.?

Absolutely veg male and females. Good selection of parent plants is key to achieving desired results.

What traits are you selecting for in veg tho? That's the part that seems counter intuitive to me. All the most revered breeders say that characteristics like vigor are hemp traits, aka non drug traits. I'm not concerned with "commercial" factors ("bag appeal", speed, max yield only, etc.) to the point of limiting the gene pool. Aroma, taste and potency are what I am concerned with most. So what information would a vegged parent give me? Say I had five of the same strain in veg in front of me right now...what could I possibly learn from looking at them?

I don't see why you couldn't or shouldn't go 12/12 from seed, as long as you are still able to take cuttings or reveg your keepers. I usually give most plants a second chance since they usually turn out better from clone than from seed, but you can weed out/cull the definite non-keepers quickly this way.

I know for me personally when I run through my homemade beans to see what options are in a line I'll run them all with very little veg time if any at all. This way you get to run a whole bunch of plants at once and the ones that aren't any good at least don't take up too much space.

Desired vigor, structure for males and females. If you got straight to 12/12 you might not find that. But to each his own.

it's always best to flower plants that are mature, this is why you should veg until maturity instead of going straight to 12/12.

Scrappy...theres some tricky timing involved though, right? You could pop a whole bunch of seeds, but you need to sex them. So 12/12 from seed. Now you know the genders but still the plants need to be smoked to find parents. So I figure you save...maybe a month until harvest...with 12/12 from seed? Then you have to reveg, but only once, and then you can keep bonsai moms and dads, forever.

On the other hand if youre good at growing early veg you could grow out and clone asap, but I see this taking a month at least...just like the other method.

Wow confusing

Over all Height would fall under structure. How quick a plant grows up would be vigor.
