Malting And Brewing Cannabis Seed

While I was making some Pakistan Chitral Kush hybrids some unwanted pollen found it's way to another area with a large female (Blue Moonshine x Berlin) x NYCD. Needless to say I have 1000's of seeds I didn't(and don't) want. So.....Let's brew some malted hemp.

First, a bit about malted grains. Malting is simply the process of germinating grains and them drying them out. As the seed germinates it produces enzymes that break down starches to simple sugars that yeast can eat for more information a quick google query will lead you to much more in depth information.

To start with I'm malting wheat as the base for the beer. I bought 500 grams of wheat grain at a bulk food store for 1.50$CAD. and soaked them in water. I spread them out on a cookie sheet and tossed them around regularly to avoid mold.

24h in the oven at ~50C

A quick shake through a wire sieve to remove roots.

And that's it. Malted wheat. On to the Cannabis Seed!

I soaked them in water over night and kept them wet over the next few days.

Even germination is important in grains that are to be malted and unfortunately this isin't the case with these seeds. In the end I'd say about 20% went too long and 20% didn't germinate in time. The rest did just fine.

This is the point I'm at now. I didn't want to start the thread without knowing if I'd at least get to the brewing process. I'm starting the rest of the process today so expect some updates shortly!

malting and brewing cannabis seed

Ok, update time.

welcome back! SO. Below is the the malted hemp after being cracked. I decided to toast a table spoon or so of seeds to see how they taste. Off the bat they remind me most of popcorn. not great but they're going in anyways

I dont want to make this a detailed report about how to brew beer but this is all i used. 4 liter glass jug, air lock, funnel, hydrometer. you can find all this at a brew shop for 20$. I'm using hallertau hops and muntons ale yeast because that's what I've got.

in they go

in teh carboy

I woke up this morning and fermentation was well under way. If I have space I always leave home brew in with my plants to make use of the c02 that's produced. It will stay like this until most of the fermentation is complete and then I'll be back with the next stage

I believe that any man who takes the liberty of another into his keeping is bound to become a tyrant, and that any man who yields up his liberty, in however slight the measure, is bound to become a slave.

That is SICK (in a good way )

Waiting for the results + photos + tasting report (homebrewer here..)

I'm guessing the hemp will add a nutty taste to it. What's the ambient temperature around the brew?

I can see putting it in the grow for the warmth, but would there be an issue with the light?

roughly 20C(68F) day temp 16C(61F) night temp.

I think you're right about the nutty taste. I use this wheat grain on it's own often and this little batch is a lot more auburn. The toasted seeds have a very strong aroma. when i cracked them in my mortar and pestle I stopped suddenly and looked around for something that was burning before realizing a second later it was the grain.

Wasn't sure if there were any other brewers about so if you'd like recipe notes I can transfer them here.

I have carboy cozzies :p a hole cut in the bottom of a pillow case goes over the air lock and covers a 5 gallon (or smaller) carboy perfectly.

primary fermentation of malted wheat/hemp

mmmmmmmmmmm! my gf almost won't drink beer now that she see's how it's made. gross ? delicious ? delicious.....

The chunks floating around are hops being carried to the surface by c02. You can see how high the foam on the surface was when it was at it's most active.

In another day or two when it settles down even more I'll siphon it to an identical jug and leave behind as much of the hops/yeast/sediment as possible.
