Good HFH strains for keeping mothers in veg?
Have any of you folks managed to successfully keep any of Esbe's stains in veg for years at a time, whilst also managing to take and root clones from them?
From what I gather, some of the Nordic strains can be quite difficult to keep from flowering due to semi-auto genes. I'm looking for which ones are a good bet to keep as mothers. I've heard Danish Gold and Leb are difficult to keep in veg, so I'll be staying away from those, or any crosses where they are quite significant (50% or more). Anyone know about Royal Dane? I have some Arne (50% Royal Dane cross) seeds in the fridge I'm thinking of trying this summer, but I'd like to hear if they keep okay as long-term mothers. I've also some Arne's Cheese from 2011, which contains Royal Dane (25%), and Danish Passion (12.5%). I might just take the chance with these anyway, since the Danish genes are quite a low percentage. Both the Arne and Arne's Cheese sound like nice bedtime smokes; good to keep around. |

There's a fair bit of variation in HFH varieties which allows for finding the longer flowering/less photo sensitive types.
Arne's Hashplant 1 and Deep Danish were slightly less photoperiod sensitive types that were easy to keep indoor under 20 hrs of a 250w MH lamp, only for 9 months but did not show auto tendencies while being maintained correctly. With good plant husbandry it's fairly straightforward keeping short season outdoor strains going as mothers. Strong light + adequate root space + nute regime are key to this. Strong tip cuttings of plants then grown outdoors in full long day veg mode will make quality mothers when brought in and kept under maximum possible lumens. There's a fair bit of discussion around the place on keeping mother plants in peak health. Arne's Cheese is a good place to find a practical mother plant I reckon. |

Thanks for the tips, Pangolin. I have some HP1 beans that I'll definitely be using, but no DD unfortunately. I'd read elsewhere on this forum that HP1 females will generally only pre-flower in veg, but I'm sure root pruning any mums, and feeding on an appropriate regime will still help. I'm planning to keep bonsais anyway, so it'll be an essential part of maintenance.
Just read on another forum that Royal Nepal (50% Royal Dane) is a tough one to clone. Think I might hold off on trying to clone the cheese for now, as I've only so much space to utilise, and HP1 sounds like a safer bet. I've also decided to go with Mango and Timewarp (from other seedbanks) for this mother project; they should just about finish a week or two before November at my latitude. If anyone has any other suggestions (from HFH) I'd love to hear them. |

Stug, here's some relevant discussion on Nordic mums, not sure if you'd seen this or not...
https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=165129 I'm going to try and root some cuttings from some hfh strains I've got growing now, with a view to keeping the best performers for the summer outdoor season. I'm not really looking for long-term mothers (although you never know if something special pops up) but just hoping to keep them in veg long enough take some early finishing cuts for myself and a few friends for guerilla grows. I'm thinking that if I get them outside in the 1st half of june while the daylight period is still getting longer, then they might not go straight into flower. We shall see. |
