Co2 flushing w/ Dry Ice

I'm wondering if using dry Ice to gas flush O2 for my long term storage vessels is a sound idea. The displacement for 1lb of dry Ice is around 252L of volume. Essentially a small amount of dry Ice could easily displace the volume of a large Mason jar. I've been doing a search for a few hours now for some information on gas flushing with dry ice but, have only found reference to its use in the prepper community(ie. Flushing a 40gal drum of rice) but not here..?. Appologies if this is out there as I'm surprised I couldn't initially find anything.

Well sealed jars can explode

If the displaced volume of air has no place to go and you add to the volume with dry ice it could explode a glass container, that's speaking from experience.

Iron powder (sachets are available) will achieve the low O you are looking for, without exploding dangers :P

russjcan will become famous soon enough
I started using these Iron Oxygen Absorbing Packets last year and they really put a good seal on the jars.My big box grocer has them by the bulk foods and food grade buckets. 3 is supposed to be enough for a 5 gallon bucket. 1 in a half gallon jar works great.

I understand where the poster is coming from...I think they plan on putting the lid on loosely and hope the co2 (heavy) forces out most of the air before closing up the jar.

My one concern with o2 obsorbers...Do they not heat up? Hate to cause my herb to sweat before locking it up in a jar for a month or 6

If you put the oxigen absorbers in a five gallon bucket that is sealed it will suck the side of the bucket in.

And if you use the dry ice to displace the o2 you will need to do something about condensation when it melts.

Thanks Blast, yes I was not thinking of displacing O2 with it having no where to go. Lids will not be screwed on while flush is occurring.
Icabod, care to elaborate with the condensation issue because dry ice doesn't melt so I'm kinda confused. Are you concerned that the dry ice would chill the air inside the jar enough that when it warms back up it will condense water?
Hmm.. Didn't know about the iron absorbers..

Dry ice is cold and when you place it on something that gets cold from it you will get condensation. I used to to store grain for my chickens in 55 gallon drums and it made the grain wet that was in contact with the dry ice. So I placed a piece of plastic under it and no wet grain.

Absorbing the oxygen is a good idea.
That leaves mostly Nitrogen.
And flushing with nitrogen is a good storage strategy.
But I'd do some more research before flushing with CO2

THCA in raw cannabis is in it's carbonic acid form.
In that form it is too big to pass the blood/brain barier
I go to some lengths to remove a carbon dioxide molecule from THCA so that it will be active when ingested.
stored weed releases CO2 over time, but I'm not sure it can do that in a CO2 saturated jar.

To store smoking stash, It might be an excellent choice.
The smoke gets decarbed, "on the fly" when you light-up.

But for storing edibles?
I have to wonder.

Just 2, Sativa driven, cents.

Aloha,
Weeze
