Recommended landrace sativa for newbie grower?

Hey all,

I'm a medical user in WA and I really like the clear/uplifting highs, not super racy, but clean, happy and mellow. I mostly dislike the groggy/couch lock feeling that I get from some strains. To me a lot of these are more like 'downers' and can sometimes stick with me for a few days. But it's really hard to find any 'pure' (I think that's somewhat of a misnomer) sativa strains at the dispensaries and usually the stuff they mark as sativa has some other things mixed in that are not always desirable.

To continue my search, I was looking to start trying some landrace strains. I get that for most suppliers, growing is a business and they have to look at maximizing yields, thc content, etc. so I'm not holding my breath that dispensaries are going to start having a steady supply of what I'm looking for. That pretty much leaves growing my own.

I have 0 experience growing pot and I was looking to get some advice here as to what might be a good landrace (or, if not technically a landrace, something similar to what I am looking for), for a newbie grower.

I am not super concerned about yield, this would be an indoor grow in a closet or tent purely for my own, state certified medical use. Probably 5-6 foot max with a couple of sq. feet footprint. Not expecting much for my first time, but if I going to put in the money, time and energy, I want to make sure it is a strain I want to smoke.

So any advice about strains, preferably ones that I can readily obtain (from either online seed vendors, or somewhere locally in WA), that would be reasonable for a newbie in a smaller indoor grow would be much appreciated.

you don't need to go for a sativa if you want clean happy and mellow.. there's plenty of indicas that will fit the bill..

A nice Mexican, Nepalese or North Indian stain could fit the bill very nicely without too much hassle: quite fast, productive and nice high. The hashplant and Kush landraces or any commercial hybrid with Afghan/Skunk genes could be ok but most have a heavy and narcotic comedown too.

As long as you say away from tropical and equatorial landraces (from 16 towards 24 flowering weeks depending on the origin!) I guess it will be fine and easy. Otherwise you will have to deal with extreme long flowering times and hermie tendencies that may ruin your grow. Those for sure will come later, as soon as you get hooked on exotic fine ganja strains and want to keep exploring. Then, Africans should be the next with longer flowering and intense effects but still nicer than SE Asians for the grower!

There are also plenty pure "sativas" and hybrids without any skunk or commercial kush genes with delightful effects for the gower who's looking for an stimulating experience rather than a couchlocker. Have a look at CannaBioGen (Destroyer, Panama, Mextiza, Caribe, NepalJam) and Delicatessen Seeds (Queen Mother, Alice, Lilly, Dreams&Honey) they both carry finely-bred and easy sativas with Mexican, African, Jamaican or Nepalese genes. Tropical Seeds has some energetic Congolese and legit Durban hybrids too.

I love stimulating high and neville haze is my favorite for that for long time.

I tried lot of haze hybrids and I think neville haze is the keeper for my old days

Normally you don't get a clean or stimulating high from hasplants and commercial strains because they are all mostly based on the same Afghan, Skunk or Dutch hybrids (like most commercial strains) and they have a particular way of growing and certain kind of cannabinoids and terpenes, very different to those found on tropical strains like Mexicans, Thais, Hazes, etc.

But anyway, don't forget that actually all the cannabis drug strains are from the same species: Cannabis Indica. According to the latest scientific and anthropological researches, Cannabis Sativa only include the hemp subspecies and absolutely all the drug strains evolved from the same C.Indica strains that originated and spreaded from Central and South Asia all over the world with the help of men. Be it Africa, Thailand or Jamaica, the genetics are the same and originated in the Himalayas foothills and from there, to India and all over Asia and the rest of the world.

Another thing is the current separation between Narrow Leaf Drug types (what is normally known as sativas) and Broad Leaf Drug types (what is normally known as indicas and only includes the very special Afghan and Pakistan landraces). And in this case, the different effect has more to do with the kind of cannabinoids and terpenes that some strains develop under tropical sun and within the ecosystem where they evolved isolated for many generations.

Vibes.

If it's mellow you want, you'll have some body relaxation to it, some stoniness as well.

Mustafunk mentioned the Nepalese and North Indian, you'll get some nice plants that will flower from 10 to 12 weeks easy and provide a nice and relaxing buzz with some really pleasant euphoria.

You'll find some unrefined hashplants from those regions that will need some cleaning up if you plan on smoking the buds.

Another favorite of mine is a nicely selected PCK, I crossed it with a nepalese, to me, the pck had a mellow, clean and lively buzz without being too heavy. I think the nepalese only added a little brightness to it but I saw that ace seeds had a Malawi x PCK that looks interesting.

but if you want to stick with landraces the real seed company has a few north indian and nepalese strains in stock.. now those are unselected so you'll find individuals that range from cultivated plants to the wildest looking plants.

I don't really have advice for a pure landrace sativa, but if you want something that has a clean, happy, mellow high that's not too racy, I'd recommend a nice blueberry or blueberry hybrid. My BB sativa is really one of my very favorite smokes because the high is just like you describe.

Look into DJ Shorts, Chimera, or Greenpath Seeds. VerdantGreen also has BlueDigiberry F2's at the bay right now, or if you can wait a couple months I'll be sending in some Stank Bros BB F3's into the bay for the server fund this fall.

NepaleseJam by Ace and Cannabiogen, it's not a landrace sativa, though they have some, but it's powerful, mellow and happy stuff.

Thanks all for the advice. I should clarify what I mean by mellow
I've had some hazes that were more to what I am looking for, same kinda happy, thoughtful high but without so much of the fuzziness or couch lock. I think by mellow I just mean controllable, my mind isn't racing a mile a minute. But maybe that is more a factor of quantity rather than particular strains.

I've tried DJ shorts blueberry and it's definitely got some of the qualities I am looking for, happy for sure, but (at least the pheno I sampled) it had the body stone and downer qualities I am looking to avoid. Pretty much puts me to bed with slow fuzzy thoughts and I wake up the next morning feeling kinda groggy and in a funk.

Interesting points regarding sativa vs indica being different sub species, but the same species. I picked up a newsletter at hempfest this past weekend that enlightened me to that, and I've been trying to avoid using sativa or indica to describe what I'm after.

Although, most things labeled as indica at the dispensaries I visit are the more couch locky, downer type stones for me. Oddly enough, the indica hybrid stuff I enjoyed the most were a select few kush strains, ghost og comes to mind, but again there were also some undesirable traits as well. Still, I don't completely rule out indicas (sometimes it is nice t completely veg and get a good sleep), and maybe there are some with very different highs.

I'm also checking out punta rosa on top of all your suggestions, some of the smoke reports on here make it sound close to what I'm after, and not a bad indoor grow. Thanks again all for the great info!

Oh yeah just thought of a beet wart describe the mellowness, it's like my mind is not racing, just content and thoughtful. Still capable of intellectual thought, not stuck in a chair, but content to sit and read, listen to music etc. Everything is enhanced, taste, sound colors, and my mood is uplifted. The kind of stuff that can give you trippy effects too if you smoke more, which can be kinda fun too.

One story of a strain I really like (think it was a haze) was I smoked some, and felt just really great sense of well-being but not really high at all. Happy and smiling I stated to read some comic book or something and a few pages in one the panels just burst into 3D land I was like yup,I'm high . And from that point forward it was a great time like I described above.

Not sure if this is the sort of thing I can expect from the narrow leaf phenos of landrace plants but that's what I am after.
