I was just using tomatoes as an example because I have worked with both. Actually I maintained several varieties of heirloom tomatoes for my wife, I did not breed tomatoes, just made my own seeds year after year. The wife grows 50 or more big Heirloom tomato plants for our use and for tomato pulp peeled and frozen.
I have made seeds from dozens of plant species, I am an organic bio-dynamic vegie gardener for 45 years, a lifetime member of the Seed Savers Exchange.

Damn Sam, those pictures are a dream to what will hopefully be commonplace in the next couple years.

Here is a SIMPLE setup..
Some Malawi F1 seeds i bought
Boys and girls kept together outside in the tropical sun..close to africa
Started with only 12 seeds, and wanted more to work with.So decide to make F2.
Only got 3 girls in total, so I selected the three boys I found most appalling in regards to smell, and growth structure. I kept on slow male, one faster and one more slow with some color on the stem..To keep some variety for my next generation..
It is just a test for me.. the real work starts with the next generation,looking for something that can be of interest..
and hoping my location will prove useful for working with sativas...
I would love to be working in a more similar situation to sam in the future..and I am working towards it..but I am not a breeder.. I just live to grow..
