There have been many encryption tools available over the last couple decades. Most were either overly complicated to use but secure, or completely insecure and really easy to use. Truecrypt was unique because it was completely secure and very easy to use. There will have to be a replacement but I agree that Bitlocker is NOT it.

I would advise anyone that would like to continue to use Truecrypt to NOT download or install any "updates" (this includes the latest version) of the software for the simple fact that the US government rarely breaks encryption, but instead embeds backdoors into newer versions of software.

So then what is the last working version you'd recommend?

I have a .exe of an older version (not sure which one) backed up on a hardrive - in case something like this happened...

Phase 1 audit passed a while back and there were no signs of a backdoor. I'm still going to use TrueCrypt until I see the reports on Phase 2 audit. Frank, If your version will still work for your needs, then use it if you want. It's up to you. Create a hidden volume and you should be fine.

PortablePGP is a good program if you just need to encrypt files or text.

The latest version of Truecrypt is still out there and should still be useful. Just like Lavabit Im sure they are choosing to shutdown rather than continue operations which would require that they comply with a National Security Letter.
