Truecrypt = Kaput

Yes, true crypt, for anyone who doesn't already know, has gone tits up. The prevailing theory is that they have received a warrant for their keys and so they have shut down like Lavabit did.
They have left a message at their site saying for people to use bitlocker, but anyone who knows about the whole Tc ethos will know that truecrypt devs recommending a proprietary encryption system is a bit shady. So people think that this is their cryptic way of letting people know that they have had a Nat-sec letter or a warrant for their keys.

No idea what to use for windows, but there are several good open source encryption programs for linux. Tails comes with it built in.

The world needs a dozen more Edward Snowdens to provide the transparency that governments promise, but fail to deliver.

I hope Snowden gets the Nobel Peace Prize.

It's an encryption for your harddrive..If you have sensitive material on your harddisk, you should have it encrypted!

I don't think anyone knows exactly what has happened with TrueCrypt for certain. I actually believe Snowden drew more attention to TrueCrypt because he endorsed that and lavabit in a video statement, and those programs are both history now. Very strange. I really liked TrueCrypt.

Nobody knows, but bitlocker is insecure by design, so them recommending it is shady as fuck. Hence people believing that they have been NSAd. They can't legally come out and say "we got a nat-sec letter/warrant for our master key".

Either way, tc is no bueno now. Strange how it happens around the time of the code being audited though.

Ya its all weird. They still plan to do the audit of the code sometime soon. I think there will be another open source encryption program eventually, or a revival of TrueCrypt, just a matter of time.

"We are continuing forward with formal cryptanalysis of TrueCrypt 7.1 as committed, and hope to deliver a final audit report in a few months."

checkout TrueCrypt.ch to stay informed of updates.
