Cancer patient's medical marijuana ripped away by thieves

https://www.kesq.com/news/cancer-pati...ieves/25611296

Doctors diagnosed David Cochran with stomach cancer in 2008. He turned to medicinal marijuana for the pain, got licensed and started growing it.

His medicine got ripped from his backyard in Palm Desert three times by thieves. The most recent theft was caught on camera Oct. 10 last year. Cochran said they took five plants, only left one and a trail of soil behind.

"For what I'm doing, takes me a year to do. For someone to park, jump my fence and two minutes take it, it's not right. It's wrong on many levels," said Cochran.

Cochran said he knows who did it. He and his girlfriend Judy Johnson reported four names, a license plate number and surveillance video to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department in Palm Desert. However, since then no response.

"To me the Sheriff's Department has had the attitude, 'It's just pot.' It's scary to have people come on to property and take things," said Johnson.

Department spokesperson Armando Munoz said he would look into the status of the case and respond as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Johnson and Cochran watch closely and hope it doesn't happen again.

"I would hope they would prosecute these kids. If they get away with this, they'll think they can get away with robbing people and stealing other people's things," said Johnson

Same thing happened to me. Hopped my fence, and left a leaf trail right to the persons house that stole my plants. Big, crazy looking dogs, roaming the back yard seems to be the best deterrent.

Sorry to hear about that. I have surveillance too.... but when people cover their faces, those cameras dont help much.

I understand the guy is a cancer patient... but I gotta wonder, after the second robbery, why didn't he get a pit bull or a doberman? Or, at least, have a lockable greenhouse structure built? I sincerely hope the rippers get their just dessert, but I also gotta wonder why no one has helped this guy thief-proof his garden? I mean 3 times?! I admire his determination though, and his refusal to let it stop him.

He needs a higher fence on that wall too late now I'd get a couple hood pit bulls but that's just me. Too bad guy was near tears local pd is right on the case I bet lol. I don't know I was a bad kid did a lot of things I'm not proud of growing up here in so cal but I knew better than to jump into people's backyards sure as hell knew better than to steal things from peoples backyard never know what could be waiting for you. If I knew him I'd tell him to build one of those lockable cages like greyskull has with the privacy fence.

I guess I ran with a different crowd when I was younger, because it was considered the unspoken rule that you never stole from private individuals. Only large corporations were ever allowed to be the target. But no, nowadays people just go for whatever is easy pickings. I call these people the hyena class. They are useless and should be exterminated.

That's the main reason why I've stuck with indoor growing. Plants in the backyard are easy targets unless you have a lot of land or have someone watching them 24/7.

We want to keep our little town quiet

I had to build a zombie defense LOL Cameras, Motion sensor floodlights, wall it off, setup a fully enclosed chain link cage you can lock (as a back up harvest if they steal everything else), loud dogs, be up and willing to watch the cameras on its own monitor not the TV, sleep weird hours and keep yourself unpredictable.

Oh and NOBODY is your friend!

What a life, right?

Lights would have helped this guy... I went through the same problems not far from where he lives...

Alot of thieves out and about... More than I have ever seen before...
