I believe you are correct. I don't see leafhoppers on the label for avid or forbid. Off to get some Safer insect killing soap. I'll make up a bucket and DUNK them all tomorrow...what fun.

Yeah looks like leafhoppers. True bugs will need a couple of follow up apps. I'm an advocate of dipping rather than spraying, for 100% coverage, plus it washes off some of the eggs. I wouldn't go too long between apps. Do an area spray since they're so mobile.

I've used insecticide soap a lot. Do it during night or just before lights out and raise the lamps way up till they're dry. You might want to get Pyrethrum into the rotation.

I'm interested to see how the soap works on them. LH's are probably not going to cause serious damage unless ignored. And I know you're diligent, so this will be interesting. I've only dealt with them a little outdoors, so this could be an unpredictable ballgame-for me anyway.

I think it can be done with nothing stronger than Pyrethrum, and maybe not even that. But they're so mobile.

They lay their eggs in fairly visible clusters, so you can probably monitor some of those around the garden. An oil or an essential oil mix might help.

The article I read/skimmed from Purdue said they don't like or do well on hairy leaves. I bet they would be less of a problem on resinous buds if numbers are at least controlled.

Spinosad claims to kill leafhoppers. Good luck. -granger

Ya know Ace has this horticultural oil real cheap that is harmless like Safers and works the same.

Bugs really bug me too...I smoked them out!

A fire is too radical a cure however. Bog

I picked up the insect killing soap last night, and I've got some spinosad around here left over from thrips last year. I'll have to dig it out. These critters got to GO!

A fire is a little stronger remedy than I'm looking for for sure, although I have witnessed the insecticidal powers of fire smoke. These hoppers have really sucked the vigor out of the babies BOG. Hopefully they'll start to bounce back now that the problem is being addressed.

On the bright side, I saw 0 evidence of broad/cyclamens. Some of the leafhopper side effects a similar, which is why I thought bm's at first. Well, if I can get rid of broad/cyclamens, leafhoppers should be a breeze. I'll post some update pics in a day or so.

Day 28...Recovery

It's been 4 days since I found bugs in my seedlings. I'm reasonably certain I'm dealing with potato leafhoppers. If you compare the pics from post #36 with this link:https://extension.entm.purdue.edu/fie...leafhopper.php

you'll see what I mean.

I sprayed Avid on tuesday, and when the lights came on wednesday, no more bugs. I don't much care for Avid, but the stuff WORKS. I also dunked all the plants in insecticidal soap yesterday. I HATE bugs.

I contacted safergro about their Omri rated pesticides. They said, "Pest Out is effective against all mites including broad/cyclamens, but not leafhoppers. Bio Repel, repels leafhoppers, but doesn't kill them."

The plants are in rough shape from the bug attack, but seem to be coming back. I gave them a full strength feed yesterday for the first time, and they seem to be responding to it. The leafhoppers saliva has toxins in it, so the plants need to get over that as well as the actual feeding damage. I'm really hoping to see normal growth resume sometime next week, but we'll see.

Anyway, this is how I''m looking at day 28:

Those leafhoppers really stunted my growth

They will recover. Just give a transplant soon and keep at the bugs...

Thanks BOG. Will do on the transplant. I was thinking 1 more week at most in the 6" pots. I've bought some 2 gal grow bags for the next stage. I just haven't seen a reason to transplant yet because of the stunted growth.

NO MERCY for bugs!

Day 31

It's been 1 month since I started the seeds. I transplanted them all into 2gal grow-bags yesterday. I added 15% perlite to help with drainage. It was quite a chore, but the transplant seems to have went well. Hopefully I can begin sexing them soon. I had to shoehorn the last few bags into the tray. The plants are still recovering from the hoppers, but growth has resumed, and the color is coming back. Plants are 4-8" with 3-4 nodes. I'm planning on toping the plants in the next few days. I'm going to wait for the plants to get nice and healthy before I cut for clones. Also, I don't see any point in taking cuts until they've been sexed.

There was still noticeable damage from the hoppers, but the only pest I saw any evidence of was fungus gnats. I'll drop some go-gnats on them next time I water. I figure the leafhoppers have set me back about 2 weeks and wrecked my nerves, but life goes on. I'll spray with Avid again sometime this week, just to be sure. I'm still looking for an OMRI approved pesticide for leafhoppers.

So here's how it's looking a 1 month, most of the yellow is the hps:
