I just got my new 400watt hps ballast kit fired up and I noticed a slight smell. It kinda smells like hot metal. Its been running great for 3 days now. Is this normal? The ballast isn't hot or anything.

my 400W ballast stunk for a few days then it stopped. I think its the lubes and whatever else on it burning off??? not sure.

yea mine smelled for a few weeks too, its nothing but new ballast smell.

yep, when my 2 1000 watts fire up, it's like you say - it just smells hot. That's because they are hot. Quite hot actually. Nothing unusual though.

i fired up a new 1000 watt ballast and it smells like chemicals real bad .
is this normal ?
will the smell go away , or is there something wrong ?
I have never noticed this on any ballast before

I just fired up another ballast , no smell . different brand
