why bother with all the fuss when you can get one prewired and fabricated for under 150........................... .....
https://www.nationalgardenwholesale.c...4_RF&prod=1353 just me two cents but 6" diamter you can find at flower/vase stores but are expensive and then you have to cut the bottom off.......or get one of those pyrex bakeround things but can only do a 600 or a 400 in em and no MH bulbs.....have fun....somoz |

it's more fun to DIY and also, 150.00 is heavy coin for some growers, especially first-timers like me . i started in on this thinking i was going to get up and growing for the price of a couple of flouresecnt fixtures ... DOH !

Go to Michael's or Hobby Lobby (or whatever chain arts and crafts store is near you) and ask for a Hurricane Chimney. Costs about $6.
Then grab a 4" to 6" reducer from Home Depot or Lowes for another $7. While you're there, grab some copper pipe strapping for an extra $2. Go home. Attatch mogul socket to pipestrapping with the socket mounting screws. Attatch pipe strapping to large end of reducer with your preferred method (I used 1250 psi 60 second epoxy from Wal-Mart - $3). Attatch Hurricane Shade to small end of reducer with aluminum duct tape. At least that's what I used, use what you'd like. Attatch 6" ducting to reducer, screw in bulb. Turn on fan. Turn on light. Total - $18 Going from 120F to 72F - Priceless. For reference, those are 1kw lights. I have two plants currently that are within 3" of the cool tube with no burning. 'Course, it's your money

Here's something a guy on OG reminded me of that I'll share with you:
Glass will cut down 6% of the light that goes through it. If the reflector is on the outside of the glass, the light must path through the glass (6%), hit the relector, bounce back through the glass (6% of that), and then through the other side (6% of that). If the reflector is placed inside the glass, it only must pass through the glass one. It will still work fine with the reflector on the outside, but you will be cutting down a decent chunk of the available light if the relfector is on the outside. If you can get the reflector inside the glass. With an air cooled hood this isn't a problem, but with cool tubes it can be a little more challenging. Hope this helps. |
