Coco Coir Help needed - What are some coco coir recipes??
I can't find anything on the net....
How do you grow w/ coco coir? Do you put compost in it? Do you put perlite in it? 50/50 dirt/coco? Need some help....I'm sick of expensive peat moss that damages the environment................... .. Thanks |

You can do all of the above, plus doing it plain...I'll step aside for the experts...

I have experimemted with an organic based grow using coco....it's alright.
I was mixing 50%coco with 50% hydroton and hand watering every 3 days. This is the thing, coco's food web and cationic exchange are very different from a soiless/peat mix. There is a reason that the maker of the finest grade coco in the world Canna had to develop a fertilizer that would be tailored to coco as feedings are different. Initially the web is full of Potassium (K+) wich gets bumped as the grow progresses by calcium and magnesium ( ca+2 and Mg+2), this means the web binds ertain elements and makes others harder to keep in the rootzone. Fertilizer wise this means high K rates are maintained during the grow and that a calcium and magnesium fertilizer is also used in addition a P/K booster is necessary halfway through flowering. I composted it just like soil with ammendments and it worked OK and I had to tweak the mix with some PureBlenPro, it doesn't lend itself too well to soil ammendment practices as dolomite lime can mess things up in coco by taking over the web and in coco N is very readily availble and easy to burn with. I am not well versed in soil biology scientifically speaking so you'll have to do some research but this is my ![]() I do use it as a part of my soil mix as it has some great properties that lend themselves well to a soil mix, I use 20% coco in my soil mix and use 2 TBS dolomite lime as a base mix. ok so..all you do is get a hunk of coco, and then put a seed in it, and it'll grow? Then just fertilize? I find that hard to believe...how does 100% coco retain water.....where do micro/macro nutrients come from to start the seed off......?

haha, no. a seed in a hunk of coco won't grow....it'll need some water
kiddin aside coco has no nutrients in it so you must add them. It's a hydroponic medium. coco alone will hold a lot of water. some complain that it holds too much water. most people add perlite or hydroton to make the mix a bit more airy and drain better. To start seeds a good method is to use rapid rooters. germ the seeds, place them in the rooter tap down and keep them on a heat mat. When they get to their first set of leaves is when you can add a small dose of nuts. seeds come from the factory with enough food to get them to this point so a brand new seedling that's just popped it's head up won't need food. when the bottom of the rooters have well established roots poppin out you can pot them up how you like. Some water with nuts every time, some feed every other watering. There is lots of info around here on diffent methods for using coco. Last edited by GroNut; 04-21-2006 at 04:17 AM.. |

Hey shibby 'N crew.
I had some seedling's sprout thinking that my local hydro shop had canna-coco ,but alas they only had bio-bizz coco-mix, does any one know anyting other than stated on the bag. I have fed with P.H 6.3 ajusted water only because that is the P.H of the substrate. It is a mix of compost and coco but I am unsure what percentage mix it . Anyone? |

I read that coco has a great ability to attract and bind calcium more than other mediums which means that in the beginning of growing one has to supplement w/ extra calcium in order to have it still be available to the plant while the coco is still sucking it up. so so far I have 1 recipe for coco: 50% perlite (or hydroton) and 50% coco coir. Any others? I'm thinking maybe 70% coco, 20% perlite, and 10% wormcastings? Or 70% coco, 20% perlite, and 10% manuer Anyone? Anone? Experience? Share it!!! Thanks |

If I had to try again i'd probably have gone with a mix like this
40%coco 30%perlite 10%wormshit 20% promix HP 1 tbs d.lime/gal for added Ca try calcified seaweed, haven't tried it though. If it's in a mix I think it can perform very well, I wasn't trying to discourage you to try it with that long ass post. S
