Colorado and Denver weed tax passed

Denver Post Wednesday November 6, 2013

Well it passed. Maybe it will make weed more a more mainstream commodity. I was not in favor of such a high tax. There will be a state 15% excise tax on wholesale product and an additional 10% state retail sales tax. Denver city stacked an additional 3.5% sales tax on top of that. The Denver tax may be raised as high as 15% without asking voters if the city wants more money. My hope is that when the politicos see the $$ they won't repress weed.

Wow that's awful.

The joys of legalization ehhh?

Nothing is truly legal when you get slapped with a tax like that.

Might as well call it what it is a 15% fine on weed.

Next step, ban home grows. We can't have the black market stealing tax money from the children's?

i'm not shocked that this one passed ......... hook education to anything and people will vote for it

you know the dispensary lawyers are gonna lobby hard to complicate things for us now (us being the private growers who just had a big favor done for them)

home grows are going to be hard to ban IMHO. they can only limit me to my 6 plant med grow as it stands and i will never ever have to buy herb unless they get a vote going to change the rules again.

.......... but the government has certainly done dumber shit than that

we'll see

Not as hard as you think. Nevada has been growing their own for over a decade. We are issued agg numbers, the program was originally ran by the dept of agriculture because in oue constitution it says the Plant shall be free from seizure and the only legal means has ben self cultivation for a Decade. But the legislature just passed an ammendment that once the storea open no more home grow. Tjey said the intent of the original law did not allow home grow. Its the twilight zone now adays.

It's good that cities and municipalities can benefit for the added tax. Anywhere from 3.5% to 5.0%. My county was 3.5%.

In the Netherlands it's heavily taxed, but you don't see the numbers when you buy your 3 grams (maximum allowed for a sale) of pot or hash. Due to their tax structure on the coffeeshop business, they've maintained one of the highest (no pun intended) standards of living in Western Europe. We can only hope the states approving recreational marijuana will do the same.

If you feel the tax is too exorbitant, then GYO. Look at the current "SIN TAXES" on both alcohol and tobacco....consider the state and community tax, just as that.

According to the CO gov. web site, the tobacco products excise tax in Colorado is 40% of the manufacturers invoiced price.

The Colorado excise tax on liquor is $2.28 per gallon, one of the lowest liquor taxes in the country. Excise tax on beer is $0.08 per gallon, again one of the lowest beer taxes in the country.
Tax on Wine is $2.28 per gallon, and is already added to the purchase price of all wine bought in Colorado.

So either grow or brew your own, or go with the majority and pay the tax.
