At $9.19 an hour, Washington already has the highest state minimum wage in the nation, but reportedly, Seattle is considering raising it even higher. Both the City Council and mayoral candidates have stated that they would consider the $15 per hour minimum wage. One City Council candidate, economist Kshama Sawant, has even made the issue central to her campaign. Advocates argue that the higher minimum wage would benefit the city's economy by creating demand. Economist Chris Benner said, "There may be some job impact in those small businesses themselves," according to the Associated Press. "But in the entire economy, when you increase income to low-wage workers, it creates jobs because those workers are likely to spend their additional income and that increases demand for goods and services." Currently, more than 15 million Americans are making just more than $15,000 a year. If the push is successful, Seattle minimum wage workers could earn more than $31,000 a year before tax
