broken MH
This is what happened to my 1000 mh bulb. The glass fell off and the light kept burning, going on and off with the timer for 5 days. When I came to look in on them, the plants were all fried from the uv rays. End of story for that crop, which was two weeks into flowering. This ever happen to anyone else?
hope my picture showed up here? |

"Nice" picture. Was that a generic lamp? Mishandled in the past, perhaps? Guess folks aren't kidding when they say not to run a unit with cracked glass.
thanks for posting, blak |

Good pic blak, I'd suggest you check on your plants more often if you can. I know it might be difficult but nothing substitutes for the human being being on site. UV burn must've cooked those poor plants. Such a waste!

One of my worst fears. I have had one MH and two HPS bulbs fail, but both just quit, without any drama.
I only run enclosed hoods, with tempered glass, in the hopes of containing a blowout like you had. I try to keep anything easily ignited off the floor, and also installed "Flame Defender" units. Make sure you are giving your halides a "Rest" period, of at least a half hour, once a week or more. I don't understand exactly what goes on in these bulbs, but every halide I have used, said to give them a rest, on the package. Supposed to reduce the chance of catastrophic bulb failure. I'll take them at their word on that one. Very glad to hear things worked out. I bet your hands will shake for a couple days! Regards |

One other thing to consider... Was that bulb rated for vertical operation? The way it failed, it looks like it must have been hanging vertically.
There are position ratings on halides, and it would be easy to get the wrong one for your application. Regards |

Do a thorough cleaning of the grow area underneath where the bulb was because that thing was pressurized with mercury powder before it cracked and it most likely went over your grow area when it broke.
