I would try some ammonia or citronella in a jar with a small hole or two in the lid and place it somewhere in close proximity (Like at the base of the plant you want to protect) and see how that goes....I vaguely recall being told once that they don't like the smell of fish oil either, but don't quote me on that....it could have been for possums.

I used to get a product named bone tar oil. It was great at keeping dear away. I don’t think any critter would want to come near the smell. You just drip some on the ground around your plants. Warning, don’t get even the smallest amount on you. After you’ve washed several times you’ll still smell it. Never dealt with kangaroos, but if they have a nose this should work.

sharpened stakes, 2.5 mts in lenght , buried 500mm into ground with the pointed end facing outwards away from plant, making it difficult for a 2mtr kanga to get past the stakes without getting skewered

if fencing isnt viable then there is little else that will stop hungry kangaroos eating plants in mid-summer when most grasses have dried off and there is little else green to eat ... you know yourself how far you will go to get food if you are starving
if there is other green food available close handy then they may leave the Canna alone

in my exp. odour will not stop kangas (but dont let that stop you trying it), only some kind of physical barrier will stop them,

all the best with it anyways
