Feminized seeds/silver nitrate
Hi growers !
I have some questions about silver nitrate. I have Psoriasis and often get nasty wounds on my feets because of the Psor. and because of that i get so many bottles i want of Silver nitrate( it makes big wounds to close and heal faster) and i wonder what more chemicals do i need to make STS so i can do feminized seeds ? Do i need sodium to mix into it or what ? I´ve read some info on the `net but i dont understand it so well. So i wonder if someone could explain to me what more i need to get what i want and where to get the missing chemicals to my solution ? ? ? On the bottle it says; 1% Silver nitrate (25 ml). Very thankful for some help in this matter. . . |

10 g. AgNO3 per liter is a little more dilute than the 17 (16.987) from this PhytoTechnology Laboratories, Inc. pdf. The 1.58 (1.5811) grams of sodium thiosulfate is for the anhydrous salt, 2.4818 g. would be required using the usual pentahydrate. Bet you'd like someone to do the math using one of your bottles for example. Evaporate 170 ml. of 1% solution down to 100; or 34 ml. down to 20 ml. and use 1:4 with a stock solution of 2 g. of the pentahydrate in 80 ml. water, there you go.
Silver Thiosulfate (STS) is commonly used to block the action of ethylene in plant cell cultures. Ethylene is a hormone that is present in the gaseous state. Ethylene increases during senescence and ripening, and has been shown to increase in plant cell cultures due to wounding or the presence of auxins. Silver nitrate may be used alone to block the action of ethylene but it is not transported as well as STS thus is seldom used alone. Prepare a 0.1 M Sodium Thiosulfate (STS) stock solution by dissolving 1.58 g of Sodium Thiosulfate into 100 ml of water. Prepare a 0.1 M Silver Nitrate stock solution by dissolving 1.7 g of Silver Nitrate into 100 ml of water. Store the stock solution in the dark until needed to prepare the STS. The STS solution is prepared with a molar ratio between silver and thiosulfate of 1:4, respectively. Nearly all of the silver present in the solution is in the form of [Ag(S2O3)2]3-, the active complex for ethylene effect inhibition. Prepare a 0.02 M STS by slowly pouring 20 ml of 0.1 M silver nitrate stock solution into 80 ml of 0.1 M sodium thiosulfate stock solution. The STS can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a month. However, preparation of the STS just prior to use is recommended.
