TRUCKEE, Calif. — Four people were arrested Sunday on suspicion of drug manufacturing and child endangerment following a chemical explosion inside a Truckee apartment.
Police and fire officials responded to a reported grease fire at about 2:30 p.m. at the Truckee Pines apartment complex at 10100 Estates Drive, according to the Truckee Police Department.
Authorities determined the fire was caused by a small chemical explosion “when several subjects were trying to make hash oil from marijuana,” police said in a statement.
One of the apartment’s occupants, Anthony Thomas Garner, 20, of Truckee, suffered moderate burns and was treated at Tahoe Forest Hospital.

[They were blasting inside with a child in the house, the 4 people are looking at a cumulative sentence in jail of 120 years]

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Hash oil, it's a growing West Coast drug trend that has made its way to Virginia.
It's already killed one Radford college student and now local drug enforcement agents are on high alert.
"We know it's probably coming to this area. We've dealt with hash oil in a couple of cases that have been brought in from outside areas kind of thing where we tracked the intelligence back, outside of Rockingham County," said Special Agent Mark Campbell with the RUSH Drug Task Force, who is training his officers to recognize hash oil.
It's derived from marijuana and uses THC, the potent chemical in marijuana, to give users a high.
Some of the ingredients in hash oil are legal and sold in stores.
One of those includes butane fuel; however, some stores require you to enter your birth date to purchase the fuel to confirm you are over 18 years old.

One danger of this illegal drug is the threat of an explosion because of butane fuel.
"It could be the static electricity off of your clothes, anything that's an ignition source or anything that will cause a spark," said Campbell.
Just last month, Radford University student Ryan Koon died and Radford Police said a butane hash oil lab caused the house fire.
Campbell said if there was a lab here, the clean up would be handled exactly like a meth lab operation.
"Because the potential for the explosion, the potential for the things to go bad with the gas that's used or the chemicals that are used," said Campbell.
Campbell also said training officers and letting others know the dangers of the drug is key to stopping it.
"Unless you know what it looks like it could mimic an improvised explosion device. They actually look like pipe bombs, if you don't know what you're looking at," said Campbell.
After trying to talk with Koon's parents, his mother said her son's death was just too soon and too raw to talk about.

[There will be new Federal Laws because of this and the closed system of extraction should be exempt. I've seen no problems or explosions while using this system; under 30 years old, blasting inside and using tubes seems to be the thread going thru all the explosions and fires.]

Anthony Gambale, 19, and his girlfriend, Gabriella Katanov, 17, face counts of reckless endangerment, criminal possession of marijuana and criminal use of drug paraphernalia after their alleged attempt to make ‘earwax,’a potent version of marijuana, left them badly burned.

The two Brooklyn teens badly burned when their drug lab blew up have been hit with charges of reckless endangerment, criminal possession of marijuana and criminal use of drug paraphernalia, cops said Wednesday.

It was not clear when Anthony Gambale, 19, and his girlfriend, Gabriella Katanov, 17, would be arraigned, as each suffered second- and third-degree burns on their hands and upper bodies.

The childhood friends, who have been dating for seven months, nearly killed themselves early Tuesday trying to make “earwax” in the garage of the Marine Park home where Gambale lives, police said.

Police said the couple had filled a 30-gallon tub with cannabis and soaked it in butane in an effort to make earwax, a highly potent version of marijuana. The butane ignited when one lit a cigarette.
Gambale and Gabriella were rushed to Staten Island University Hospital, where they remain in serious condition, said Luba Poukhova, Gabriella’s mother.

“Their lungs are good . . . but from the waist up, all burned. Her hands, too. She could be in the hospital for a year. She needs surgery. The doctors said it will get worse every day,” the devastated mother told the Daily News.

Butane extraction to capture hash oil causes explosion at Longmont house; 2 men hospitalized

Posted: 12/18/2013 for 7NEWS

The Denver Channel

LONGMONT, Colo. - Two men trying to extract hash oil from marijuana by using flammable butane gas were injured when it exploded in the garage of a Longmont home on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The blast happened about 12:40 p.m. at 30 James Circle, near Missouri Avenue and South Pratt Parkway, said Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur.

Neighbors hearing the blast ran over to help and saw the garage door was open and two men were on fire -- their clothes were burning, Satur said.

One of the men ran off and one of the men was packing and throwing things in the garbage. One of the men told the neighbors not to call police, but neighbors did.

Paramedics took two men to Longmont United Hospital -- one with severe burns who had to be transferred to a burn unit, and one man who had burns to his face, Satur said. A third man was not injured.

Investigators believe the men were extracting hash oil -- or a high concentrate of THC -- using butane. They had the marijuana highly packed and were spraying butane through the marijuana, trying to capture the oils from the pot.

But the butane vapor built up and was somehow ignited, causing the small explosion and fire, Satur said.

There was a small marijuana grow operation in the basement that was recently harvested, Satur said.

The marijuana grow was legal, but the hazardous hash oil processing is not, Satur said.

All three men now face charges of felony arson and endangerment, Satur said. They have not been identified.

The last time this type of explosion occurred in Longmont was in October 2012, when a man doing a similar THC extraction was smoking at the same time and ignited the vapors, Satur said.

Similar hash-oil processing explosions have occurred in towns around Colorado.

What is it about Butane that makes people stupid, does it run in the family? Did this man's father work in a dynamite factory and get killed in an explosion while smoking a cigar? Why hasn't some of these idiots made the Darwin list? They all break the cardinal rule, don't do butane extraction inside and thats right up there with don't put your dick in a pencil sharpener.

Our experience is with solvents that are liquid at ambient temperatures, such as alcohol, acetone, paint thinners, and gasoline. The mistake being made is equating our experience with these to some liquid butane sitting in a dish.

The common solvents we work with daily, when spilled and ignited, flash up and then burn on and on as the liquid slowly vaporizes before combustion. Spill a dish of butane and ignite it and it instantly vaporizes on contact with anything above it's boiling point of about 35F, and then flashes completely, explosion!

Sure we use propane torches and BBQ grills, but we don't have experience with the danger of quantities of exposed flammable liquids that are gases at ambient.

That's the answer, but I don't know how to word it to get the point across.

Redding Fire Department firefighters respond to a mobile home fire today at the Riverside Mobile Home Park on North Market Street in Redding. A 49-year-old man was injured in the fire.
A 49-year-old man was seriously injured today while he attempted to extract hash oil from marijuana inside his mobile home, Redding fire officials said.
John Keller suffered second-degree burns on his hands, arms, head and face and taken to a local hospital, Redding fire inspector Craig Wittner said.
The incident, dispatched just after 11:45 a.m. at the Riverside Mobile Home Park at 901 N. Market St., was quickly extinguished.
According to Wittner, the man told firefighters he was cooking in the kitchen when the fire started. Firefighters found drug paraphernalia in the house and called the Redding Police Department to come investigate. Firefighters ventilated the home and waited until it was safe to initiate their investigation.
Wittner said the fire was sparked when the man injected butane into a marijuana-filled copper cylinder.
It flashed and ignited the combustibles immediately around the kitchen.
Neighbors told firefighters they heard what sounded like a whistle and a loud boom.
Keller, who was on fire, walked out of his home seeking help, Keller said. A neighbor came to his aid.
This is the second hash oil explosion firefighters have had to extinguish in the city. Firefighters on Oct. 9 were called to an apartment on Olive Street.
In that incident, a woman was taken to a hospital with minor burns.

Another extraction done in the privacy of their home, the real hurt will come when he's doing 3 to 7 years.

That is 4 in one week - so far. We still have today and Sunday.

In reality, it should ONLY BE DONE INSIDE, with a proper chemical fume hood, wearing non-synthetic clothing, and in a lab licensed to use gases like n-butane.

Also, most people's "outside" is a residential backyard, next to other homes. Or on a deck right next to the house, or on a porch hanging off an apartment complex. The garage is always filled with half-used mastercases of butane. And children are usually inside the house.

Wouldnt hoods be ineffective since butane fumes sink?

Depends on how the fume hood is vented.

As you note, butane is heavier than air and its vapors try to sink and pool, as do some other solvents, so I built our hood with the makup air acting as an air knife at the bottom, sweeping any low hanging vapors toward an exhaust slot in the exhaust plenum's bottom, and have a second exhaust slot at the top to capture lighter than air vapors.

We run about 2000 surface feet velocity at the intake slot and the make up air is gravity fed outdoor air. A door with a polycarbonate window closes the exhaust hood and cabinet from the lab, so as to not stink up the lab or screw up our HVAC.

Even with the exhaust system, we still do not open extract indoors, or purge off visable pools of butane indoors.

We have one automated Mk II fully enclosed extraction system in an indoor lab, separated from other structures and in an enclosed spark free cabinet. It has exhaust slots on two sides at the bottom and air is blown in from the top, so as to force any heavier than air accumulation out the slots. Air is replaced in the cabinet about once every three seconds.

We've operated all of our other systems thus far outdoors, because even though they are fully enclosed, something can go wrong. In a fully enclosed system, the leaks tend to be small, but I once over pressurized the Mk I test sled and the lid seal started leaking at a significant rate. Enough of a rate that it would have been a problem, had it been indoors and an ignition source present.

The Mk IV and Mk V are designed to use a pressure relief valve, that vents excess pressure away through a hose to a safer location and since the systems are not regularly broken down and stored, all the stainless overbraided PTFE hoses, wither use an NPT connection, or a copper crusher at the flare connection, instead of an elastomer, so the most likely location of leaks is triclamp connections or valve stems.

They use two bolt high pressure Triclamp connections, so except for carelessness, they are unlikely to leak, leaving valve stem leaks.

All the valves used have adjustable stem packing nuts, but still have to be regularly replaced due to stem wear, or in the case of the main dump valve, rebuilt.

There are valves (expensive) available that have bellows protecting any stem leaks, and which would make the systems even more fail safe, but the key word here is more, because we've yet to make one that we can guarantee to be leak free regardless of how it is treated or operated.

In all my professional years installing high integrity helium and argon inert gas systems in aerospace, I was never able to achieve any system that remained leak free over the long haul, even using high integrity inert services valves and piping, so I don't expect to do so now. Shit happens, and things go wrong...................
