Hashish oil explosion injures two men and a child - Medford, OR
and another, this time another child was seriously injured...
Hashish oil explosion injures two men and a child November 26, 2013 By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Police said victims were making hash using butane when it ignited, and the resulting fire burned two men. A girl, 12, jumped from the burning apartment Making hashish oil in a Medford apartment led to an explosion that sent two men to a Portland burn center and put a 12-year-old girl in the hospital with broken bones. The explosion occurred at 10:29 p.m. Monday at the Valley Pine Apartm ents at 645 Royal Ave. when butane used in hash oil preparation exploded, according to Medford police. The blast burned 27-year-old Edward Bryant Shelton and 34-year-old Andrew William Long, police said. Long ran to nearby Providence Medford Medical Center for treatment of his burns. Shelton was found outside the apartment and taken to Providence. Both were transported to Legacy Oregon Burn Center in Portland, where they remain in critical condition, Legacy officials said Tuesday. The 12-year-old girl jumped from a second-story balcony to escape the fire, breaking some bones when she hit the ground. She was treated and released at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. A 37-year-old male and 48-year-old female, the girl's mother, escaped without injury. Four engines and 13 firefighters from Medford Fire-Rescue responded, meeting Medford police and Mercy Flights at the scene. "It came in as an explosion, possible fire and also a possible burn victim," said Ken Goodson, battalion chief for Medford Fire-Rescue, adding the explosion was not an explosion in the traditional sense. "It was probably more of, I guess you would call it a flash fire." Responders could see into No. 233, on the second floor of the three-story complex, from the street. Smoke poured from the porch door. Responders found 27-year-old Shelton outside on the ground, injured from burns. Firefighters found a small fire burning in the kitchen. A moderate amount of smoke permeated the apartment, Goodson said. It took just a few minutes to extinguish the flames, leaving minimal damage to the home. No other units were damaged, he said. Several aerosol cans and containers of butane were found in the room, investigators said. Fire and police evacuated the building's other apartments while they investigated the scene. Fire crews left the scene at about 1 a.m. Police said Oregon Medical Marijuana Program cardholders can legally prepare hash oil, though it was not known whether the residents had OMMP cards or how much marijuana was involved. Medford police, the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement Team, and Medford Fire-Rescue continue to investigate the case. "We're going to be looking at this with some heavy scrutiny," said Lt. Mike Budreau of Medford police. https://www.mailtribune.com/apps/pbcs...260350/-1/NEWS |

Someone once told me that the 90/10 rule of thumb was flawed in thinking that 90% of the population was more or less instep, and 10% out, because of the number of folks in the 90% who aren't paying attention and unaware that steps are being taken.
I think it is safe to say that the dangers of extracting in an enclosed space with flammable liquid/gases, have been well publicized and those doing so publicly excoriated, yet some folks just keep doing it anyway. That supports Maslow's summarizing statement that it is a mistake to forget that there is pathology in the populous and says scads more about the brothers and sisters who continue to do so, than mankind as a whole. Since they also continue to do so in the presence of innocents, especially children and pets, it tells you that they are are sociopathic. Here is a list of sociopathic tendencies, as listed at https://www.sociopathicstyle.com/psychopathic-traits/ . Consider that not everything is black and white, so use the list as a scale, rather that two polar opposites. A little good and a little bad in all of us...... The Hare Psychopathy Checklist – Revised GLIB and SUPERFICIAL CHARM — The tendency to be smooth, engaging, charming, slick, and verbally facile. Psychopathic charm is not in the least shy, self-conscious, or afraid to say anything. A psychopath never gets tongue-tied. They have freed themselves from the social conventions about taking turns in talking, for example. GRANDIOSE SELF-WORTH — A grossly inflated view of one’s abilities and self-worth, self-assured, opinionated, cocky, a braggart. Psychopaths are arrogant people who believe they are superior human beings. NEED FOR STIMULATION or PRONENESS TO BOREDOM — An excessive need for novel, thrilling, and exciting stimulation; taking chances and doing things that are risky. Psychopaths often have low self-discipline in carrying tasks through to completion because they get bored easily. They fail to work at the same job for any length of time, for example, or to finish tasks that they consider dull or routine. PATHOLOGICAL LYING — Can be moderate or high; in moderate form, they will be shrewd, crafty, cunning, sly, and clever; in extreme form, they will be deceptive, deceitful, underhanded, unscrupulous, manipulative, and dishonest. CONNING AND MANIPULATIVENESS — The use of deceit and deception to cheat, con, or defraud others for personal gain; distinguished from Item #4 in the degree to which exploitation and callous ruthlessness is present, as reflected in a lack of concern for the feelings and suffering of one’s victims. LACK OF REMORSE OR GUILT — A lack of feelings or concern for the losses, pain, and suffering of victims; a tendency to be unconcerned, dispassionate, cold-hearted, and non-empathic. This item is usually demonstrated by a disdain for one’s victims. SHALLOW AFFECT — Emotional poverty or a limited range or depth of feelings; interpersonal coldness in spite of signs of open gregariousness. CALLOUSNESS and LACK OF EMPATHY — A lack of feelings toward people in general; cold, contemptuous, inconsiderate, and tactless. PARASITIC LIFESTYLE — An intentional, manipulative, selfish, and exploitative financial dependence on others as reflected in a lack of motivation, low self-discipline, and inability to begin or complete responsibilities. POOR BEHAVIORAL CONTROLS — Expressions of irritability, annoyance, impatience, threats, aggression, and verbal abuse; inadequate control of anger and temper; acting hastily. PROMISCUOUS SEXUAL BEHAVIOR — A variety of brief, superficial relations, numerous affairs, and an indiscriminate selection of sexual partners; the maintenance of several relationships at the same time; a history of attempts to sexually coerce others into sexual activity or taking great pride at discussing sexual exploits or conquests. EARLY BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS — A variety of behaviors prior to age 13, including lying, theft, cheating, vandalism, bullying, sexual activity, fire-setting, glue-sniffing, alcohol use, and running away from home. LACK OF REALISTIC, LONG-TERM GOALS — An inability or persistent failure to develop and execute long-term plans and goals; a nomadic existence, aimless, lacking direction in life. IMPULSIVITY — The occurrence of behaviors that are unpremeditated and lack reflection or planning; inability to resist temptation, frustrations, and urges; a lack of deliberation without considering the consequences; foolhardy, rash, unpredictable, erratic, and reckless. IRRESPONSIBILITY — Repeated failure to fulfill or honor obligations and commitments; such as not paying bills, defaulting on loans, performing sloppy work, being absent or late to work, failing to honor contractual agreements. FAILURE TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR OWN ACTIONS — A failure to accept responsibility for one’s actions reflected in low conscientiousness, an absence of dutifulness, antagonistic manipulation, denial of responsibility, and an effort to manipulate others through this denial. MANY SHORT-TERM MARITAL RELATIONSHIPS — A lack of commitment to a long-term relationship reflected in inconsistent, undependable, and unreliable commitments in life, including marital. JUVENILE DELINQUENCY — Behavior problems between the ages of 13-18; mostly behaviors that are crimes or clearly involve aspects of antagonism, exploitation, aggression, manipulation, or a callous, ruthless tough-mindedness. REVOCATION OF CONDITION RELEASE — A revocation of probation or other conditional release due to technical violations, such as carelessness, low deliberation, or failing to appear. CRIMINAL VERSATILITY — A diversity of types of criminal offenses, regardless if the person has been arrested or convicted for them; taking great pride at getting away with crimes. The word psychopath can be replaced with the word sociopath throughout this page. The meaning is very similar, if not the same.

Pot processing caused apartment explosion in campus area, police say
Pot processing caused apartment explosion in campus area, police say
By Allison Manning The Columbus Dispatch Friday November 22, 2013 5:52 AM An explosion at a University District apartment on Wednesday afternoon was caused by two men using butane to turn marijuana into potent oil to be used in e-cigarettes, Columbus police said yesterday. When police arrived at 1327 Dennison Ave. shortly before 1:30 p.m., they found more than a simple fire. Windows had been blown out of the eight-unit building. A search warrant turned up 1,200 grams of marijuana, 16 grams of cocaine, 150 grams of hash, 36 unidentified pills, butane canisters and assault weapons, narcotics bureau Cmdr. Gary Cameron said. Two men were using the butane to extract THC oil from the cannabis, Cameron said. The plan was to put the oil into electronic cigarettes for sale. The explosion was the second in a week involving attempted oil extraction from marijuana. On Sunday afternoon, a man told Grove City police that he sprayed butane into a marijuana-packed 2-liter bottle and placed it in a freezer, causing an explosion at a town house on Walden Bluff Court. Police there found a marijuana-growing operation that included 15 mature plants, 10 pounds of packaged marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms, 14 guns and information on cultivating marijuana. William D. Lawrence, 30, was charged with two counts of illegal manufacture of drugs and two counts of drug possession. Grove City Police Capt. Jeff Pearson said that Lawrence apparently was planning to use the oil in e-cigarettes. In the Columbus case, nobody has been charged, but detectives plan to present evidence to a grand jury. The two men showed up at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns on their arms; one man remained there yesterday. https://www.dispatch.com/content/stor...explosion.html |

Radford University student dies after severe burns
So it looks like the Radford man died from his injuries:
Radford University student dies after severe burns Ryan Christopher Koon, 20, of Salem, died after suffering burns in an explosion on Nov. 20. JORDAN FIFER | 981-3349 Sunday, December 1, 2013 A Radford University student died Thursday, a little more than a week after he was seriously burned in an explosion in Radford. Ryan Christopher Koon, 20, of Salem, died from complications of surgery, according to his published obituary. He had been flown to the burn unit at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Nov. 21 after a suspected butane hash oil lab ignited, officials said. Officials at the time didn’t identify him, but Radford police Lt. Andy Wilburn said Saturday it was Koon who was severely burned in the explosion. Emergency crews responded late Nov. 20 to the 300 block of Fourth Avenue, near Radford University, and found smoke coming from a home’s kitchen, Radford city spokeswoman Jenni Wilder said at the time. After quelling the fire, an officer spotted numerous cans of butane on the floor of the kitchen and drug paraphernalia in two bedrooms. An investigation then suggested a butane hash oil lab ignited and caused an explosion, Wilder said. There were three others in the house at the time, she said. Butane hash oil, known as BHO, “honey oil” or “wax,” is a potent marijuana concentrate. It has become more popular in recent years and can be dangerously explosive. Koon attended Salem High School, according to his Facebook page. He was studying computer science and working in technology support at the university, according to his obituary. He’s listed online as being a member of a student cyber defense club. The incident remains under investigation, officials have said. https://www.roanoke.com/news/nrv/2418...ere-burns.html |

A man trying to make hash oil with a butane torch in his bathroom caused an explosion that "significantly" damaged an apartment, according to Colorado Springs Police. It happened shortly after 10:00 p.m. Saturday at the Grandview Apartments located on the 2500 block of E. Pikes Peak Ave. Police say the man left the apartment before they arrived, but was found later and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other apartments were damaged because of the explosion and no one else was hurt, according to police. Colorado Springs police, fire, and arson units are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made. "It seems like a relatively recent trend of people who have figured out how to turn a benign plant into an explosive." 2 injured in fire at Vista home; dog rescued
Another dog injured:
2 injured in fire at Vista home; dog rescued UT San Diego By Debbi Baker and Teri Figueroa6:46 A.M.DEC. 9, 2013Updated2:03 VISTA, CALIFORNIA — Two people were injured, a dog was rescued and two men were arrested after a fire in Vista Monday morning destroyed the back half of a house where authorities found a marijuana-growing operation inside the dwelling. The blaze at the one-story home on Vale Terrace Drive off Foothill Drive was reported at 5:47 a.m., Deputy Fire Chief Ned Vander Pol said. When firefighters arrived, the rear of the home was heavily involved in flames and the roof had collapsed, he said. A woman and man who were both injured got out on their own. The woman was airlifted to a burn center, and the man was taken to a hospital in an ambulance, Vander Pol said. Firefighters pulled a Labrador retriever out of the house and gave it oxygen using a donated mask made specially for canines. The dog was then taken to a veterinarian. Twenty-four firefighters, including crews from Carlsbad, had the flames contained at 6:11 a.m., Vander Pol said. The two arrests came after investigators found marijuana plants growing in the garage, and a honey oil extraction operation outside the house, Turner said. The oil is a concentrated liquid form of marijuana. A space heater apparently sparked the fire, sheriff’s Lt. Hank Turner said. Vista residents Tyrone Williams, 37, and Isaac Bowers, 39, were each arrested on charges of growing marijuana and possessing it for sale, tampering with an electrical apparatus and stealing electricity. U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration spokeswoman Amy Roderick said 16 marijuana plants were what was left following the blaze. https://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/...ns-vista-home/ |
