breeding Q?

hi all, i posted the same questions elsewhere on this board and got over 20 views but no response. here goes...

if i select 2 different phenotypes from the same backcross (f1?), reverse 1 to pollinate the other, is the offspring an f2 still? (my guess is 'yes')

now, if i go back to the BX beans to find a true male to pollinate a selected offspring from the example above, what have just created? f3? f2bx?

it's not super-important at this stage, but i'd still like to know.

pls help me figure this out.

Yo Sunny!
If you are starting with a Bx, then they're not F2. If you were starting with the P1 generation and making seed to make F1, then mating (natural male female or reversing) or selfing the F1 matings generate f2 progeny. The moment you toss in the backcross step it no longer follows the standard F1 mating. F1 matings are from genetically distinct matings. Back crossing involved inbreeding so no more true f1 is possible in that line.

Since you are looking at progeny of a Bx and then reversing there is extensive inbreeding happening and filial generations no lover apply...if one wants to be as precise as possible and follow the true meanings of the definitions. It sounds like to me the beginning of a route to a very specific set of traits within the line...which is more like the starting point for an IBL I'd say.

What are your goals and what traits are you interested in, just out of curiosity?

Cheers

Right on Sensi- Your right in that, going for a specific goal is the beginning of a IBL- woody
