Purple Kalichakra
I was wondering if anyone else has gotten purple phenos of the Kalichakra strain by Mandala seeds.... I have 2 that def. have fan leaves getting more purple by the day. There is a 25*F temp swing every night, so that probably does it.... but ive never heard of anyone reporting a purp pheno.. Has anyone else seen one or am I the first around here?

None of mine have turned purple yet, but I'll be sure to keep an eye on this. I have heard cold night temps can do this to fan leaves.

Ya I know its the temp swing that does it, but the trait still has to be in the plant for it to be expressed right? Does anyone else have any info on this? MandalaMike?

yes you are right the trait has to be in the plant's genes, for it to turn purple, whether it's caused by temp change or no temp change...
your most likely is caused by temp change, because you are experiencing a 25 degree swing between day and night.... here is a pic of RR's kalichakra were the leafs turned purple... https://www.icmag.com/ic/gallery/show...at=500&page=16 https://www.icmag.com/ic/gallery/show...at=500&page=16 but the buds didnt turn purp, as seen here (RR's kali pic) https://www.icmag.com/ic/gallery/show...at=500&page=15 https://www.icmag.com/ic/gallery/show...at=500&page=15 also the most logical reason mandala mike hasn't responded is, because it's planting season and he's proly really busy getting us more beans to grow.... i think he has a e-mail address on his web site that he checks daily... if you desparately need an answer you can get it that way... here it is info@mandalaseeds.com bf

Ya i already sent him an email at that adress a few days ago. You're right tho, so far its only the fan leaves that are turning purple. Oh well, I thought I might have had some weird luck of the draw on this one.

Thanks for the email btw. I wanted to respond in the forum so that everyone can benefit from the info. The purple color is caused by the interaction of environmental factors such as light and temperature on the pigments anthocyanin and chlorophyll. Production of chlorophyll is blocked when temps decrease and, as you may know, this pigment lends plants their typical green color (because it reflects this color from light wavelength). Anthocyanin reflects reddish-purple hues and is produced in large amounts through the complex biochemical response in plants to such factors like cold, plant age, phosphorus defieciency, etc. Best of luck with your purple ladies! Mike
