My ducks
Figured I'd start a thread with the ducks and duck hybrids I currently have going. Running 3 of USC DF which is from Wally's old stock, just bred a few generations more. Also running some of Otto's Duck/AfghanErdpurt x Duck/PCK. The days are actually almost at 13 hours right now, so the flowering ducks are showing a bit of delay and stretch while flowering. Should hit heavy flowering in another 2-3 weeks.Otto's ducks are showing a good amount of webbed traits. Also seems like the webbed ones are also the ones that seem to like my climate more. Non-webs tend to stay shorter and more compact. Out of 20 stuck into soil outdoors, germ rate was probably 90%+, but lost some to the elements. We've had a really dry dry season, and all of my plants are feeling the effects. Looks like I'll have at least 3 webbed plants and 6 or so regular ones.
Would love to get a male and female from the webs, but I'll use a regular-leafed pheno if I have to. Still carries the recessive trait, so it will just mean an extra generation or so involved to stabilize. If I get a webbed male from Otto's cross, I'll likely hit it to a webbed female and one of my pure ducks from Cristalin. I haven't grown a ton of different plants - maybe 10 or so varieties, but I love ducks foot. Seems like every outdoor grower should run her. A truly special variety that sometimes gets overlooked in the days of frosty and potent indoor indica-heavy hybrids. First two are from Otto's hybrid. Other two are my pure ducks. There's another pure duck I have in a pot that should start flowering soon. Maybe a week or two. Likely will be my mom to use for seeds. The ducks are in a 10 gallon smart pot buried in the sand out here. A good 2 inches of fresh compost on top. |

Thanks, Wally. Definitely a plant I could grow for the rest of my life. Hit them with some top dress of FF bulb food. Light N, but good PK. Will probably see about making some compost tea soon and see how they like it. Nice dark green foliage with light green at the new growth spots. Looks like she has plenty of N at the moment. Funds are tight, but I've been meaning to pick up some more of Otto's seeds and Cristalin's to save for a rainy day. Have some Peyote Purple/DF, but I don't know how viable the seeds are. Took them a little earlier than I should have. Will see if I can get anything to come up.

Got some good news yesterday. At least one of my Peyote Purple/DF seeds popped. Not sure if I'll have enough to do much with those, but I'll likely try to cross it to whatever other df variety I have going at the time.
Also, looks like only 2 of the 8 or so of Otto's hybrid are webbed (which is right on track for the estimated ~25% webbed trait). I need to find a name for that one. Referring it to Otto's hybrid works for now, I suppose. Like I said before, bad conditions outdoors led to the dwindling numbers. Germ rate was top notch. Good news is that at least one of the webbed ones is a boy, so I'll at the very least be able to pollinate my USC ducks. At least one of the non-webbed hybrids is a boy as well, so that's good. Not sure if I'll use him or not, but we'll see. Hopefully the other webbed one is a girl. That would make me very happy. Given the indica in their genes, I should start seeing a lot of them showing sex very soon. No pictures yet, but once they get a little bigger, I'm sure there will be plenty of photos. |

Looks like both webbed hybrids are boys, and one of them is showing purpling along the top of the main stem as well as the stem of the fan leaves. It's not as vigorous as the other one, but I've kept both to see which I like more. Pretty easy to tell the DF dominant ones in this cross. They're more vigorous and seem a lot more comfortable in this climate. A couple of the non-webbed ones are showing the same purpling along the stems. They're much shorter than the rest of the bunch. Definitely not df-dominant, but I like them anyway. Peyote Purple/DF seedling died, but I didn't expect much from them anyway. Flowering will hopefully really start in on the pure ducks soon, but for now, they're looking good. Never seen so many small branches on a plant before. She likes to put out branches everywhere.
Here's a shot of the non-purple webbed plant from Otto's hybrid. |

Male from Otto's seeds has been dropping pollen. Was thinking of only pollinating one branch, but it's likely that I'll just stick him right there in the middle of all the USC ducks and make hundreds of seeds. Only plant I have flowering right now, so not a terrible idea. Maybe I'll just make some hash.
Also just ordered another pack of USC ducks from another vendor. From my experience, in my climate, the duck likes to grow relatively columnar with a few side branches, and a lot of smaller branches. I think the key to her is to top early at the 3rd or 4th node and then top again once the branching starts. Will test this idea soon, as I want to keep them small and bushy. Ducksfoot can take just about anything you throw at her, so I'm sure she won't mind. |

bending kamyo,
that s what i always do to them top once and bend outwards , the ducks seemed to like it even more than most , stimulates a lot of branching without having to loose your top ... |

Wally,
Took your advice and supercropped one plant that was stretchier than the other. Starting to flower, but just barely. Seems to be responding great to it. When the new set of ducks come in, I'll do that from Tue beginning. The other USC duck had a wickedly dense main cola that was getting a little rot from the recent rain. Not flower dense, but foliage dense. Cut the main one and harvested a bunch of early shit that I'll give to someone. Still have a few branches on her that are about as far along as the other duck. You can tell that these are at home in my climate, but are really sensitive to light. An hour fluctuation will make it stretch and sort of reveg. Doesn't look like your typical equatorial sativa, but behaves just like it. Still an awesome plant. Should have more coming any day now. Will document those with pictures a lot better than I have been doing. Also, looks like a lot of males in Otto's cross. Luck of the draw, so no biggie. Still managed to pollinate a branch from a webbed male to the USC duck. Looks like at least 20-30 seeds on that branch will be harvested. Will keep you all updated. |
