DeepAeroCulture: a newb to hydro

My start into the full hydro world started a month ago, only did hempy buckets prior... and here are my voyages:

02-06-2013

So I took a step a bit more into the hydro world and last week converted my homemade 10 site aerobucket cloner into a 2 site Mom aerobucket. I put two nice prospects into the net cups 3 days ago. One of these "mums" is about a 6-7 week old clone , its the small tree looking one. and the other is much younger.

INTO THIS

02-08-2013

SO these roots have absolutely EXPLODED! im not really sure what to do as far as the feeding regime though. When i always water hempy buckets we always water every other time in order to "flush" the roots out. I have been putting in the same exact mix that I have been giving the hempys. But do i ever need to change it and just put in water? maybe something somebody could chime in. These roots exploded in this maxi and silica mix.

So yea this "mum" bucket looks like it's going to serve its purpose. Im not really sure on what im doing as far as water regime but in theory I am going to need these mums pumping on all cylinders all the time to crank out as many clones. Without any nute burn!

The two plants in the mom aerobucket are growing at an OUTSTANDING rate. I guess this is my first real witness of hydroponics and the incredible growth they bring with them..

03/11/2013 - a day of rejoice

So shit is CRANKING in this newly converted cloner to a Mom bucket. It has been exactly four weeks and i have cloned off each plant 2 times for a total of about 10-15 clones.
picture.php

These Things are mini bushes after exactly four weeks. These roots are like spaghetti. technically this is not full aeroponics because there is a reservoir in the bottom so its a DWC/Aero mix. We were planning on keeping these as MOM plants but if we can pull this many clones and get this amount of growth, why not flower them out and just start some new ones.?
picture.php

So this is were i came up with the idea to do an almost exact replica of the aero-bucket except in alot larger container. This will be in the flower room permanently and have Four spots. I used this 15$ container from Lowes. Its 29gal. And from what I saw should have been waterproof. No troubles so far. It works like a charm.I didnt even have to cut out a slot for the power cord. Just kind of jammed the lid on and the cord is thick enough, works great
picture.php

I used the green aero-misters,12 of them (used red ones in bucket) and a 180gph pump. a very easy method explained by rumple i just altered a bit.
picture.php

Once i got it up and running looks as if i may need a stronger pump or less sprayers. It is actually working wonderful, because its not leaking. Just don't know if the streams will be strong enough for massive flower plants. I'm completely new to this so i really don't know what to expect. I assume i may have to put an air stone in the bottom if i'm not getting enough aeration.

well we transferred those month old hydro plants to the new container and 2 days running , no bumps. I also xplanted two of their offspring into the aerobucket they came out of. Perpetual baby! cleaned the two girls up a bit before i flipped. Cleared the lower third of growth and trying to "lollipop"

3-12 and 3-19 veg

So they switch for new plants in the bucket and the other two to flower was on March 9th. Just to show how freaking fast these things are growing..
March 12th - 3days in the KillaBucket!

Now these are from the 19th. only 10 days in the aero system

I have yet to see in my year of growing, anything grow this fast , and strong! these plants are freaking awesome . Not downing the hempy bucket as we still have a bunch, but our main focus is now on HYDRO!

the small bucket has been a bit easier to keep the PH in line. We dont really have a set pattern but about how it goes we fill up with feed, 2 days later they have drunken quite a bit and the PH is around 7.0-7.5 . So we take out what little bit of water is left and add 2 gallons of straight water. After 2 days the same process. I topped the larger one tonight and ready for her to "BUSH" out. I really havnt researched this growing style so im kind of up shit creek without a paddle, persay. But im doing just fine, just fine!

3-12 and 3-19 update

3-12 and 3-19 update

Now for the big tub in veg. I have never in my life seen something grow so fast! its like these things are on steroids. PH has fluctuated alot and its been a pain trying to keep it at an ideal 5.8-6.0. We have been using silica as a beneficial ph down. Basically its same idea as our other bucket, we run full 100% nute mix for 2-3 days then exchange out with straight water for a few days. This is a lot of work but we can easily manage the PH this way. here is the tub 3 days after switch to 12/12 March 12th.

and yes just 7 DAYS LATER! these things are unrecognizable!!

Oh my im starting to think i should have built a SCROG net directly above the square container. Its gonna take some support to hold these monsters up once they start frosting up.

P.S. -I only plan to talk and deal with my hydro plants in this thread. Any of the other plants or cloners or anything I will be dealing with in my grow diary in my sig. Thanks

So the most recent update, both sets have been in their system for 15 days now and the growth is still UNBELIEVABLE! pics describe it best..

the larger one i just topped earlier in hope of some extreme bushing!
Heres the flower set up . doing everything in my power to keep these girls out of the light. they are soaking up every bit of that 400w though.

first time i have purchased medicine in about a month, got a gram and found a Viable seed! master kush. I feel really lucky as this is how i have the 2 current strains i grow. super excited , bean is in the paper towel now!:plant grow:

MK, welcome to the world of hydro. I would run lower ppm around 500 in 0 ppm water for your veg moms. for flower I would run 430 to 480 ppm. Check out Aerokrafters posts in the rookie aeroflo grow along in my sig around page 19 for his nute regime and methods they should work well in your setup. GL OG

Thanks man appreciate the kind words. I don't have a PPM meter yet I only do the pH test drop kit. I realize if we are going to get deep into the Hydra thing then I definitely need an EC meter. Is there anyway you can transfer those numbers to the pH scale? I try and keep everything at 5.8-6. I will most definitely check out that link you sent me as I am often studying threads.

If things keep going this well then my plans are to build a aeroponic set up out of 3 metal fence posts and a 5 gallon bucket. This would be the only flower set up and I would move my tub into the veg closet with the bucket Just an idea in theory for now.

The two aren't interchangeable unfortunately. You can use a PH tester to see how alkaline or acidic the solution is, in order to gain an idea of what trace elements are

Hit enter prematurely, guess I will have to roll with it.

From the above diagram you can see when the PH range fluctuates outside a specific range, it can reduce elemental uptake of certain trace elements. You can see above a PH of 5.8, Manganese is locked out. I'm pretty sure this is why most growers prefer to let the range drift from low 5.0s to low 6.0s.

I'd definitely check out ebay as they have quite a few testers for cheap including postage. The advantage of these is unlike the counterpart PH tester, these will not require calibration.

MK, you can get a cheap ppm meter on ebay or other places for 20 buck or less and they work well instead of an ec meter. Sorry, now way to tell ppm from your ph.

Also, I would not use metal fence posts use vinyl post covers or pvc pipe. GL OG

Thanks for the information bro. I was well aware of all of that. I am a turfgrass managment student and I took a few horticulture classes in high school so I have a good background of plant science. Never can have too much info ...

thanks for the heads up on the ppm meter. I thought all they had and sold was the 100$ ones.I will have to look into it very soon. Why do you say you would not use metal fence posts? only reason i said that is because thats what i see most ppl making their aeroponic set ups out of.

have not had much time to update my threads, got alot going on. Finishing up school for the semester, just started my own landscape company and of course spending time with the family on the weekends. And visiting the garden enough so that things dont get out of hand. Already had a problem with one of our hydro buckets and we lost a plant that was supposed to be a new strain Master Kush. Oh well live and you learn. Heres a few shots from the beginning of april...

these things are MONSTERS now. Biggest , fastest healthiest plants I have ever grown. I believe the credit goes to HYDRO.

VEG 4-1 this is the little plant we lost BC a pump went out. But the big guy next to him is getting ready to be transferred into flower next week when we cut the two MONSTERS in flower.

4-19 update

4-19 update

so these flower MONSTERs are approximately 6 weeks in the pictures here. Had to cut off the lights to get some good shots. But as i said before i have previously only grown in hempy buckets and this Hydro outperforms in every way. These are the BIGGEST, HEALTHIEST, plants i have grown and they look pretty damn potent too. Will get some close ups closer to harvest. the big one is SOUR DIESEL and the smaller one is SNOWCAP.enjoy!

sorry for the crappy pics. it can be a PITA sometimes to get the camera focused when lights are completely out.

4-23 there almost ready

4-23 there almost ready

The girls have put on some serious trich action in the past 2 weeks. The buds have doubled in size and looks like were gonna have our biggest harvest so far.. When we cut these two that are in the tub, there is another plant in there that we put in about 3 weeks ago. It is getting over shadowed by the big guys but once they get harvested , we bring in the other hydro plant we have in the bucket. Trying to keep things rotating without having to suffer weeks of no harvest. If that makes sense...

Heres the sour diesel.
