I ordered a 1000 watt HPS bulb but when i got it, it was slightly cracked on the outer glass. I do not mean that it was like smashed or even chiped, it looks more like a scratch but I think that it may go directly through the bulb. Would this be alright to use? When doing research on the topic I found information about uv rays, it was saying that the outer glass stops a lot of the uv rays, and that the inner arc tube was the important thing. It said if that was broken or cracked or anything that could cause the bulb to explode. I have no problems there just a little scratch on the outer glass.

I wouldn't use it... sounds like an explosion waiting to happen.
The very first thing I would do is get ahold of the place where you bought the bulb and ask them to replace it. Most will not refund or exchange bulbs but if you get after them right away they might make an exception.

no, dont use it...contact whoever you bought it from. They should take care of it for you.

80$ for a hps is worth it because a blown bulb in your face would suck...fires suck also...

yeah the price of the bulb is not worth my life or even my grow, thanks for the info guys. I guess i am off to buy a new bulb. LOL
