Best strain for the tropics

with all this talk of rain i would like to hear peoples experiences with strains that can handle the hot and humid conditions in the tropics. typically i get 3 - 4 m of rain/year with humidity levels ranging from 80 - 100% for months at a time. ideally looking for indica and sativa strains...1 of each would cover my needs.

KC Brains mango and Greenhouse Cheese have been suggested already and i am looking into those.

so...any suggestions?

Tropical sativas are the best plants for wet tropical conditions. The best of these can be found at Ace Seeds, Cannabiogen, Real Seed Company, Tom Hill's Haze, and Nevil's new MM/Thai/Hz strains, if you can find them...So SE Asian, Colombian, Equatorial Africans etc. Don't know about KC Brain's Mango, but Greenhouse Cheese wouldn't last long....

hey mate,
well since im fairly sure i have a good idea what type of country you are in ,
you d do well to learn to grow in the dry ,
its one of the best times of year with the right variety .
if you have to grow in the wet season,
i like a really long flowering sativa ,
plant it in late december ,
so its not too big when the cyclones come ,
they should ripen after the wet finishes if you get the right variety ,
i found mango haze to be one that performed well ...

Gday Don. When i read the title i immediately thought of your Z99. We've had basically nothing but rain with high humidy and very little wind/breeze the last couple of weeks. Have a few z99's at about week 6 of flower. No signs of mould whatsover! They are the mango/zoidfuel pheno which you speak highly of. The more inica leaning strains had to be chopped early due to mould issues.
Fantastic strain. Great yield, taste, high. Top breeders! Cant speak highly enough about it. Totally reccomend any Aussie outdoor growers to try this if you get the chance.

Edit, they were started inside and veged for 4 weeks at 24/0 then put out to flower

thats what i have done for years now...veg clones then put outside to flower between April and September. atm have NL#5 which is fast flowering and produces well but gets hit by heat/rain/humidity quite easily. not necessarily looking to grow during the wet season just looking for something that will survive better then what i have tried so far.

looks like a couple of mango varieties may be on my shopping list...

what sort of yeild do you get veging clones for outdoors ?

i did ok ,, but better with plants from seed to be honest,
i found veging them under lights with long hours made them immediately flower outdoor ,
the sun being so strong , i had to put them under shade cloth for at least a week ,
loosing valuable time ...

mango haze didnt do so well in the winter spring for me,
once the rain hit her, she revegged ,
might work out ok without the rain though ..
im game to test it out ...

i grabbed a few seeds from a hawaiin friend ,
he lives in the clouds ,
figured if the seed did ok for him there ,
should be ok for u ...

hey kenny,
thanks man , glad to hear its working out and being enjoyed ...

it totally depends on the size of clone put out...in my old flouro box i could get them to 40cm before they went out and would get 1 - 1.5 oz off each plant. i now have a hps/tent and plan to veg much bigger plants. using silica helps with transplant shock and builds strong plants that don't even wilt when put out into the blazing sun...took a while to get to this stage.

yes my plants go straight into flower once moved outside and coupled with the change of environment and re-potting does slow them down a bit. i have refined my technique to a point where with careful handling the plants don't really miss a beat producing new growth within a day or 2.

even though i am in the tropics i do get light winter frosts that do tend to hit the sativas harder than the indicas...my NL#5 produces some nice purple hues during this time. the main reason why i am looking for 2 strains is to cater for the full growing year rather than just the dry season ie run indicas during the dry and sativas during the wet....

again thanks for your input....

Few words of advice. Your location will govern what you can grow. For instance I grew on the Atherton tablelands for five years in a very wet climate with 4 to 7 meters of rainfall. Elevation eight hundred meters. Indicas were a total waste of time. They would runt out and mould. Even in the dry season I was growing sativas not hybrids. Tried lots of different genetics. Most suitable were a quicker flowering original haze which took 12 to 14 weeks. Also I created a hybrid between Malawi from seedsman and Michoacan from Reeferman. Grew this cross to the F3 with good results.
Growers at Malanda and Ravanshoe didn't have near the mould scenario I encountered. So I say be safe. Grow those sativas.
