Alright, so my apartment is having its fire/carbon monoxide safety inspection tomorrow. I have a small grow in the closet of my bedroom right now. There is a smoke detector that is working fine in my bed room that im sure they will have to check but shouldnt be a problem. Should I be worried about this? Looking at the closet it is impossible to tell the contents. No wires or odor or noise or light leak and the door to the closet is locked. Is there any reason to be nervous or should I just cut the grow?


I've never actually had a grow going for an inspection before so i'm pretty nervous.

The grow is about a month short of finishing...

I know a lot of people will probably say better safe than sorry....but here is how I see it....

Worst case scenario- I'm going to be home for most of (depending on how long it takes) so lets say they say "we need to get inside of the closet".

I'll just say I don't have a key for it and as far as I knew it has always been locked. They are not gonna have a key for it so they have no way in and I don't think they are going to break down the door or anything.

So lets say they are very suspicious of a grow inside of the room (which I dont see why they would be, but again im saying worst case scenario). If they are I will know they are because we would of already had the conversation about the closet. They would then have to go to a judge to get a warrant (with no probable cause...) but still giving me time to cut the grow and disassemble the grow room.

My guess is realistically they are going to come in, test the smoke detectors, test the fire extinguisher, and maybe install a Carbon monoxide detector because the apartment doesnt currently have one. This should take maybe 20-30 minutes and then they would be gone, not thinking twice of what lies behind my closet door.

So, never having witnessed an apartment inspection, can someone fill me in on the details? Are they going to have any reason to try and get in my closet? All help is greatly appreciated!!

your assumptions sound right, but becasue they are the actual owners and they are not government agents they would not need a warrent, so if they did stumble on it then reported it to cops that would all be legal, just the same as long as there isn't anything in the entire apt except within the closet to suggest ur growin id say u'd be fine

if they ask you whats in the closet say its for storage and if they want in ask them why, then no matter what they say just tell them you have private things in there and it's none of their business. should this occur, i'd destroy the grow upon my arrival

I've grown in apartments for a while and I think you are fine. Worst case they would ask about the closet, you tell them your girlfriend has the key or something like that and they can get in tomorrow (then clean out at night). No reason for them to ask to look in though really, I've locked off full rooms for inspections, as long as there is no appliance/fuse box/smoke detector etc. in there, they won't ask to go in most likely.

Yeah thanks a lot for the response man. I'm going to remove or hide anything that would hint at smoking/drinking/growing and im going to try my best to come off as a clean cut college kid. I don't want to arrouse any type of suspicion. And it isnt the landlord that is going to be there, but it is the matinence dude and i dont think he really has much power. Plus, im pretty close with the manager of the property and it would def. go through her, and I think she would just tell me to get rid of it, possibly evict me, but probably keep the cops out of it if she had the choice.

Well, im not too worried about it at this point, because again, the worst case scenario is going to involve me cutting down and removing the grow as quickly as possible.

I agree, don't say the lock's not yours, it will make them want to replace it with a new lock that they are able to open.

Alright, good call on the lock story. Yeah ill just say its my girlfriends and we lock it because we have a lot of our personal valuables in there and I can get them the key later that night if they want it.

Does the closet have any vents or anything like that in it?

I'm always a bit paranoid so I don't think this will actually happen BUT if I were a FIRE inspector and knew from training that grow rooms CAN be a major source of fire if not wired properly then I might be concerned that a tenant doesn't have a reasonable enough story of why I can't look into his closet.
You say a month from finishing. How (if there is no carbon scrubber running because if there were the sound would surely raise suspicions) is a fire inspector not going to smell this when he is only a few feet away from the plants with only a closet door to block the smell?
