Light trouble

Now that my plants are getting healthier, my light wouldn't turn on this morning. It makes a buzzing sound forever, but never flips on. It's a 400w hps.

it's only been running a couple months, and I think it was new when i bought it. It was pretty cheap though.

also, are 168w (4x42w) of warm white compact fluros hanging right above the canopy going to be enough of a backup system to flower with? Only two plants.

Nevermind, I just got it working by tightening the bulb. I think the vibration from the cool tube must have loosened it just enough.

I'm still curious how the 168w of compact fluro would compare to the hps. It would be cheaper to run, and cooler. Unfortunately it's too hot to run them at the same time.

Ok, this morning it didn't turn on again. I had to loosen the bulb then re-tighten it (it was tight as can be before, and it wouldn't turn on), but then it came on.

Is there something in the fixture that I need to adjust? I don't understand what you mean by secure all the fixtures.

I think he means make sure the fluor fixtures aren't getting knocked around.I used fluoros when I started growing back in the mid 90's (off and on again) and they are finicky little bastards. You can get pretty good bud and I have seen some unbeevable yeilds from other fluoro groers but MH and HPS will blow it out the water man.Much more worth your money to invest in a small MH or HPS like a 250 or a 400 if you have the space and means of heat control and ventilation.

Actually, it is a 400w hps that i'm having trouble with. I'm thinking it's not keeping a good connection at the fixture/socket.
