Decomposing annual plants ... the primary by-products are earthworms and CO2 - mostly CO2.

Making compost creates huge amounts of CO2. Not saying that's bad, it's just the way the chemistry works. The feedstock de-composes because of bacteria and other micro-herd, most of them consume oxygen & excrete CO2.

The one time I had a chance to watch the hot composting process with a soil scientist managing, it went from well over 8 cubic yards to 4 cubic yards in a week. Then down to 1 1/3 cubic yards (all plant materials sopping wet.)

5/6 of the compost feedstock input disappeared.

I suggested to the professor, "that all went into CO2, didn't it ?"

He said yes. He didn't want to talk about it too much because his company was releasing 5/6 x 1000 truckloads (=833) of CO2 (from yard waste) into the atmosphere every day. (not the normal units for CO2 but hopefully it gets the idea across.)

It's been going on since before man walked the earth...things decompose and CO2 is produced...
Then the growing plants use it up..

The planet can take care of itself...
If we, as humans, really begin to fuck it up too badly, the earth (nature) will just kill us humans off,
and keep on ticking as she eventually destroys all evidence that we have even ever been here...

Of course, most of all the bugs will survive..
