Orisha

Has anyone here grown it and/or does anyone know anything else about it?

I grew some Orisha in soil under 400W and it turned out great. Details below. I also enjoy trying unique/landrace sativas and have some Mango Zamal, White Magic (Congo), and White Bhutanese lined up for a grow later this year. Although these strains are not recommended for indoor growing, I'm going to give them a shot just for fun. I'm in the process of upgrading my lights to 600W for this purpose. I'd be interested in hearing about whatever unique sativas you've tried as well. Cheers!

My attempt at a smoke report:

I finally got around to sampling my Orisha. As usual, Mandala's description of the high was pretty accurate. I'll simply try to describe my experience in more detail.

The first thing I noticed was the "refreshing" taste on the palate. Seemed like 'cool mint' to me. The high was subtle and came on gently. It was all in the head, very clear, and highly motivational. I didn't really know what a motivational strain was until I tried this. I was still waiting for the high to kick in when I suddenly realized I was cranking through my chores around the house. This strain totally puts my ass into gear. It wasn't racy or anything, it simply somehow eliminated my ability to procrastinate. I just wanted to get stuff done.

The effect was so subtle, clear, and functional that at first I didn’t realize I was high. There was no sensory enhancement. It was almost like a caffeine-buzz, but without the jitters. The high is also happy and stress-free. It felt like all my stress and worries had been peeled away, leaving only a sunny, motivated disposition behind. It made me smile. Seems like great anti-anxiety medicine.

Despite these positive qualities, at first I wasn't sure I liked it. The high was … for lack of a better word, kind of boring. The initial cerebral effect also wore off fairly quickly too, just like Mandala describes. I also experienced the "appetite enhancing" effect … I was mildly hungry all day and ate a lot more than I usually do. While this is great for someone looking for appetite stimulation (definite medical potential here), it's not great for someone looking to lose a few pounds After the initial effect wore off I was prepared to write the strain off as having a short-lived and uninteresting high, but decided to go back for more.

After using the resulting burst of productivity to finish my chores (which was awesome - I got a ton of stuff done), I started thinking about the high trying to understand why it made me so productive. My conclusion was that it enhanced my ability to make decisions. It didn't make me more insightful or creative, it simply made me much more rational. There was no second-guessing things … I figured out what needed to be done and just did it. No decision could withstand the onslaught of practical reason I could muster in this state … shit got decided and got done.

I then started thinking about different topics to see where my mind would go. It didn't raise my level of awareness or help me think more deeply, but it definitely propelled my thinking to new levels of understanding by virtue of the increased clarity of thought. So the motivational aspects of the high works for cerebral tasks too - seems pretty useful. I could definitely see advantages to leveraging this strain for some kinds of work. It's definitely something I want to explore more.

There was no hangover or burnt out feeling after the effect wore off. I could probably smoke this all day. It does leave you with a mild good physical feeling afterwards as well. Overall, a very interesting strain with some very useful medical properties.

I take back by earlier comment about the high being kind of boring. Orisha isn't about being "entertained" by the high. It's about being functionally absorbed in and thoroughly enjoying whatever you're doing. I'm liking this strain more and more. My only wish? Make the effect longer-lasting.
Full details of my grow are here, if you're interested.

Hey StinkyG, Great report. I enjoyed your smoke report on Orisha, sounds like my kind of strain. I like a report that focuses on the "high" of a strain rather than bag appeal, smell and taste. Don't get me wrong, those things are nice but for me it's all about effects after exhale. Your description of orisha sounds alot like mandala#1 which is my madala favorite and maybe my all time best strain pick. Is your Orisha the XL version or just the indoor "Orisha".

I may give this one a close look for next grow

Your Orisha smoke report has answered many questions I have been having about my own Mandala #1 experience. (Outdoor 2012)

Like you I kept finding myself coming back to ingesting #1 and wondering just what its special hold was.
Such a great way to begin the Day!
Great work weed. Tasty too...
Keep em coming!

Hi,

I came by this post searching for more information on the Orisha Strain,
now from my understanding, being that Orisha is very close to where i am, Yes, Orisha is actually a State on the east coast of India, and from the looks of the plant and its growing patterns, it definitely looks like a strain from the region, and i dont think it is an African strain, although i would suspect Indian and African genetics to be fairly similar,
what i also dont get is how it is claimed that this strain finishes in 5 - 7 weeks as i am positive that the few times i have grown them, outdoors, they have taken well above 11 weeks to mature and they could go longer. The only difference being that my seeds actually came from landrace plants from the Orisha region.
I have just harvested a plant and its curing at the moment, i had taken some pictures of it through its grow cycle and if you like i could share them here and talk a little more about them. I also managed to pollinate a couple of the buds of the Orisha with another landrace strain that i had collected from the Mountain regions of Himachal in India and i am happy to say i have gotten very healthy/ dark/ viable seeds from it and will do a grow soon when the outdoor temperatures are more favourable, i might start vegging them indoors for clones though.
Let me know if you want to see pictures and need any additional info!

Regards

Hi Landracing, Mandala site states 70 days for indoor flowering and lists the genetics for Orisha, as being Nigerian.

Right,

I checked up and i must admit that i made a mistake thinking "Orisha",which is apparently a tribe in Africa, was the same as "Orissa" which is a state on the east coast of the Indian Subcontinent.
I hope i haven't offended,
Seeing that characteristics of my plant were fairly similar to the Orisha.
Im sure mandala is a great bank, in fact i have in my possession some of their safari mix seeds and i hope to grow them out when the weather is favorable.

Keif - I feel the same way as you about smoke reports. For me it's all about the characteristics of the high. That's one thing I really like about Mandala's strain descriptions - they are very detailed in that regard. I respect the fact that others may care more about different characteristics though - it's different for everyone.

I still consider myself somewhat of a beginner in terms of understanding the landscape of different highs, but I am enjoying the learning process Another dimension I find overlooked in most smoke reports is dosage. I find that the characteristics of the high can be vary considerably at different dosages. I also suspect that it changes with the age of the weed too. And of course, I also wonder how much of the effect you experience is dependent on your state of mind going in. We still have so much to learn about this wonderful plant.

Interesting that you find my description of Orisha similar to Mandala#1. Mandala's description of the high being "spacy, dreamy at the start" lead me to believe it wouldn't be a functional high, so I have never tried it. I keep hearing great things about it so I may just have to give it a shot. Would love to hear your description of the high ...

Regarding my version of Orisha ... it was the regular version. One of my plants was much larger than the other though ... not sure if this was due to genetic variation, or a mis-packaged XL seed.

Unthing - I have very little hash-making experience. I have made QWET and QWISO though. What do you mean by what kind of hash it would make? I'm not sure I know how to answer your question ...

Sounds like it would be great for a long hard hike somewhere, or for sitting down and doing some writing. Mandala's description says it's fairly uniform so I wonder if a pheno hunt through 3 or 4 pack might yield something with a longer or slightly stronger effect. It's interesting to think about crossing it with something like a Meao Thai or one of CBG's American sativas.

Most of my "unique" sativas have come from ACE or CBG, either as orders or as freebies with the orders, some I've requested. I recently lost all of my stuff and I'm starting over. Two of my favorites were Angola x Meao Thai and Michoacan Verde Limon. Also the Guatemalan sativa - Bodymind has some excellent posts about his work with this one. All of these were manageable indoors too. It's Mandala's forum so I'll not go on too much more but I'll send a PM bro.
KSP - Yes, it is a fantastic active daytime smoke, and would be great for hiking. I'm not sure about writing - might depend on the type of writing you're doing, and whether you want a creative boost, or just a kick in the pants to plow through it.

Mandala's description specifically calls out the relatively short psychoactive period but I'd have to imagine that it is a trait you could select for. I'd write Mandala and ask them ... they aren't active on this forum, but have been great at answering questions about their strains over email.

Interesting that you bring up ACE and CBG ... as I learn about landrace Sativas I keep finding myself looking at their strains. I appreciate the PM ... will discuss with you more offline, or in the appropriate forum. Sorry to hear you lost all your stuff ... starting over always opens new doors of opportunity though ...

MG - Do tell more ... what is it that keeps bringing you back to M#1? You guys have now got me interested in this strain ...
