A Single Sadhu, Unsexed

Here are some photos of a four-week-old Sadhu from Mandala Seeds. This grow is my first, and therefore it is extremely experimental. I started out with six seeds, and I quickly learned that trying to veg and sex six plants in one square foot is pretty much impossible if you want the plants to be happy. (Here's a link to my IKEA mini cabinet project: https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=24707

I just started training the plant three days ago, even though I don't know the sex yet. The plant has responded beautifully to the training, with the side branches pretty much exploding in growth once I trained the tip to the side. I trimmed two large fan leaves that were in the way of the new growth, and the plant seemed to appreciate it. These plants are under 150 watts of CFLs, mixed spectrum.

The bottom fan leaves are yellowing and looking poorly, but I'm not worried about that at all. The new growth is what matters both to me and to the plant, and the new growth appears quite vigorous.

Pictured next to the Sadhu is an Afghooey clone from a S.F. Bay Area medical club. I have it just in case my Sadhu turns out male, but I have this strange, uncanny confidence that this Sadhu is female, and I've felt it since about the second week. We'll see about that...

The Sadhu did suffer very slight nutrient burn in its second week, from 300 ppm FloraNova Grow. Listen to Mandala Mike when he tells you about over-fertilizing his plants!

The last photo shows the Sadhu, which was very nearly rootbound when I transplanted last week to a slightly larger pot. Should I say again that it's hard to work in one square foot?!! The soil is 1/3 FoxFarm Ocean Forest, 1/3 FoxFarm Potting Soil, and 1/3 FoxFarm Light Warrior. The roots seem to like it.

That's it for now. Let's pray for a female...

Not to rain on your parade, but if you picked the biggest most robust plant then it's probably male.

Hmmm... "Not to rain on my parade." Interesting. Maybe you wanted to rain on it just a little, though...

Well, yes, I've heard the folk wisdom that the tallest plants may be more likely to be male.

And no, I didn't choose the biggest most robust plant.

Actually, I chose the plant that put out the most female vibes to me. Really. It just seems like a female to me. Like I said above, we'll see how far that takes me.

I'm not worried at all, though, because the past month has been a great time for experimentation and fun. Since I only smoke small amounts of MJ, I feel no need to produce volume right away. I still have one pack of each Mandala strain except for Krystalica. I also have 25 Satori from regular orders and from Seed Boutique freebies. So, if I need to pop some seeds back in the soil, I'll have a month's worth of experience when I start again, so that's cool.

BTW, if Mike reads this, I'd love to know how much stretch I might expect when I switch the Sadhu to 12/12. Also, will the stretch start right away, or would there be a delay of a week or so. I'll find out for myself soon enough, but more expert info never hurts...

After rereading my post i sense that it was a little harsh. Sorry about that, I didn't mean to come off that way. If it does happen to be male why not trim it down to one branch and collect some pollen to cross it with some of the lower branches that female afghooey and get make your own hybrid. Hope it ends up being a female for you.

My experience has been that the plants tend to strech from a few days after onset to about 3.5 weeks or so. I would expect a gain off 100%. Shouldn't be too bad since you got the lst going on.

Nice cad by the way i checked your thread the other day.

Hey, I was just tweaking you there. No big deal at all.

I think you're right about exploring my options with pollen, etc. If I'm being experimental, why not take it all the way? I think you're probably also right about the stretch, too, although I'm also thinking that such a thick-stemmed, Christmas-tree looking plant might not tend to stretch so much. That's another thing we'll have to see about.

Right now I'm regretting taking up space in Mandala's forum, since I'm not 100% committed to this plant. I KNOW the Afghooey is a female, so part of me is thinking that if the Sadhu doesn't show sex by this time next week, I might have to make a tough decision and go with the Afghooey.

Thanks for your input, Philo. We'll all get there eventually, wherever "there" is...

Hi Angel Eyes,
I don't see the server steamin' and there's plenty of space in this forum for your grow...
Love that close-up of the roots (I'm a grass roots fan *lol*). Let's just sit back and wait for "her" to sex.

I got about a 12 inch stretch on both of my Satori's and the Sadhu. Very sturdy plant. Thick, harty main stems. You able to rub the stem and get any smells yet? Hope it shows it's naughty girly bits for you soon. Good luck with the grow.

Philo, I'm not sure what you mean by bad rep, but I read your posts all over ICMag, and you have a great rep as far as I'm concerned.

Well, all my positive thinking didn't transfer to the Sadhu very well, because it ended up a male. It was a beautiful male, but a male nonetheless.

Philo, I've been watching your thread regarding the darkroom louvers, and I'm happy to see they're working out for you. I agree with you that for just about any cabinet, darkroom louvers are the only way to go. Great lightproof ventilation for a great price. Kind of like Mandala seeds: such a value that it's a wonder everyone isn't in on it!

I shall return to the Mandala forum with a successful grow. Bet on it.
