Looking on the forums for advice.

I haven't used hydroton for ages but a lot of guys recommend putting it in the washing machine on a gentle cycle. If you soak it in ph neutral water what does the water test at after a couple of days?

Not to kreen running it in a washing machine. The friction will cause more residual dust and I don't want to break or clog my machine.

I ph'd at 5.8 and after one flood and 3 hours later its up a 7.0.

I washed numerous times thinking it was clean but after a vinegar soak for 24 hours obviously not. Loads of silt at the bottom.

Day 2 in a fresh vinegar soak and the water is brown. Initial PH 3.4 rising to 5.4.

I'll keep running it till the rise slows and gets smaller

lava rock kicks ass for me. and lava adds silica to the grow helping strengthen cell walls making the plants better to fight off attacks. I use both red and black lava for different minerals they add to the grow

+1 on lava rock. I think I use 5/8". Wasn't able to pick up hydroton locally so I sourced a 1/4 yard of lavarock for $25 at a landscaping place.

Heavier than hydroton, but at least it doesn't float.

Pea gravel works fine. I used it for a while. I ran hydrotron for a while, no issues. I rinsed it in plain tap water, reused it, no problem. My only bitch was those friggin little balls ended up everywhere. Then I went medium-less and never looked back. Still finding little balls now and then after 10 years.

I heard that Dan. Over a decade since I used them and they pop up all the time. I see them in planters at a lot of public places around here too.

Kinetic is on a distinguished road
After each cycle let them soak in 10ml of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water for a few minutes and let them dry. Super easy.
