What organic admendments do you use in your soil?

There are alot of different admendments out there that people use in their mixes. I think when it comes to organic it's all about what works well together. What are you using in your mixes? do you make your own? or do you just buy a ready mixed organic soil?

My Organic Mix:

Regular Potting Soil
Perlite
Espoma Plant-Tone (5-3-3) *contains micro/macro nutrients
Bone Meal (6-12-0) *just a tad bit in flowering
Garden Lime
Gypsum
Green Sand (0-0-1)
Kelp Meal

*feed flowering plants with Bio-Bloom and Indonesian Guano Tea

I've been using a recipe LC gave me from back in the day at OG. It has worked great for me ever since i started using it. After a couple crops i am now trying to really tweak it to my plants likings. But for the most part, this starting mix is great, and when needed is backed up with a few teas.

basic mix to every gallon:
5 parts Peat
3 parts perlite
2 parts wormcastings
2 TBL powdered dolomite lime
1 TBL kelp meal

Veg/flowering mix:
To the "Basic mix" above add:
1 TBL blood meal
2 TBL bone meal
1 TBL kelp meal
1 TBL Jersey Greensand

Basically ever since i've started using this mix, i've only had to use plain water that i add a little Thrive alive B1 green to the water until flowering. I've also heard that using Maxicrop or Liquid karma or both is also very good. With that mix above i try to mix that up... moiston it with a Wormcasting/kelp meal tea , and let it sit for around 2 weeks, mixing daily to keep it aerated etc. For the most part it's a really good starting mix which after u see how your plants respond you can alter it to your plants likings. -Opt

Like opt says:

Basic Mix:
5 parts Canadian Spaghnam peat(or coconut coir)
3 parts medium perlite
2 parts wormcastings
2 TBS pulverized dolomite lime per gallon of the above mix

You can use dry/liquid, balanced/complete fertilizers with this mix....For newbies, it's always best to discuss the potting mix and it's ingredients before going out and purchasing...

For those using commercial "prepared" potting mixes:

6 parts potting mix
2 parts perlite
2 parts wormcastings
2 TBS pulverized dolomite lime per gallon of the above mix

Same with using fertilizers....A grower has to consider the premixed fertilizer's in the potting mix when mixing....Hope this helps....LC

I like lavender cowboy's mix best. Mine is very similar.

Peat was used alot in the olden days because it is cheap and can be found locally alot so did not need to be imported. It hasn't got the best draining qualities however and compacts over time, suffocating roots as it compacts. We are living in the 21st century and importing has become so cheap that peat should not be used anymore imo. I try to give my plants the best anyway.

What I add to my mix is very easy. 5% Bio-Bizz Pre-Mix and 10% Wormcastings.

A good replacement for the Pre-Mix is this home-made recipe:

2l bone meal

1l blood meal

1l Dolomite Lime

1l Kelp meal

1 cup of epsom salts

I use three ingredients: Sunshine Mix #2, Whitney Farms All-Purpose 5-5-5, and Maxicrop Soluble Seaweed Powder. I mix them at transplant and water until harvest.
I have used this mix on many different varieties of plants with great success including 2 first place Oregon Medical Cannabis Awards.

No-one has mentioned topdressing as opposed to using teas? Is that an uncommon practice?...as many back-of-package directions mention it.

Worm castings worked great (tried just once) until 2 weeks later (veg.) when they were all used up, not enough was added to the mix obviously.

It feel like tha ol days @uknowwhere with this new forum!

aeric,

I wouldn't even consider "topdressing" over teas....I like the guarante the ferts are getting to the rootzone with teas....Wormcastings should be added at around 20% of the mix or used in teas....LC

I agree, the bubbling of the tea with a little molasses is what multiplies the beneficials in the mix and makes it active.
Topdressing is OK for guanos that aren't really active and are better broken down over a periode of time, with the EWC you want the full effect pronto.
