DIY Bicycle Powered L.E.D. Grow
The Quest:
Ride a bike for "x" hours a day generating enough energy to grow some veggies with L.E.Ds. I had this idea a few days ago.. What if me and another person could ride a stationary bicycle generator for 2-4 hours a day, which would generate enough energy that I could grow enough veggies for a couple salads a week. At this point Im fairly unfamiliar with everything involved in this except the fact that I can ride a bicycle, and grow veggies. As for the generator, battery, LED end of things.. I also will be setting up an indoor aquaponics grow in the same space. Its possible the LED may end up over one of the grow beds. I will be sharing any relevant information I find along the way. Heres one of the first things I found... "The average “in-shape” cyclist can produce about 3 watts/kg for more than an hour (e.g., around 200 watts for a 70 kg rider), with top amateurs producing 5 watts/kg and elite athletes achieving 6 watts/kg for similar lengths of time. Elite track sprint cyclists are able to attain an instantaneous maximum output of around 2,000 watts, or in excess of 25 watts/kg; elite road cyclists may produce 1,600 to 1,700 watts as an instantaneous maximum in their burst to the finish line at the end of a five-hour long road race." Any information you have or directions to head is greatly appreciated. Just to repeat myself and make sure nobody missed it because we all know how stoned we are sometimes. I already have a Medicinal grow so the mission here is to grow other kinds of food, like salad greens, straw berries, etc.

Ive seen the set ups with the stationary bike, and everything inline. The guy peddling was running a television and gaming system while the other sat on his ass playing it.. haha It would prob take some cash but Im sure there is a kit out there. Good luck

My friends have played shows at festivals with bike power. I realize I am going to need some sort of battery and I have a feeling that is going to be the most expensive part.

A friend was involved in this: https://www.magnificentrevolution.org...ike-generator/
There is a bit of DIY info to get you started. This system generates 50 - 100W when in use so 4hrs pedalling would power approx 8 - 16W system for 24hrs. I think it maybe be best utilised in a greenhouse to supply 50 - 100W supplementary lighting at dusk to extend the day length. Last edited by GrowbagUK; 11-04-2012 at 11:34 AM.. Reason: more info: |

If you could figure out how to use an alternator, you would be money. You would probably need some crazy big ass gear ratio however to get it up to the rpm's it needs from just peddling the bike.
I always wanted to do this in the house, just for the lights and exercise, kind of futile for growing, but definitely a cool experiment!
