Coco
I started using coco 3 months ago so I can offer a few helpful bits of advise for ya..
1st off allways cut the coco with another medium I use grow rocks. I don't like a 50/50 mix as other sugest I like slightly more coco 60/40 is a good mix. I have mixed it with perlite and that works very well too. When using coco always adjust the PH to the correct level becouse nut lock out will accour and a compleat nutrience with micro and macro nutrience is highly advisable. I sugest ph adjust the coco lowwer to a 5.5 or 6.0 when first using it that will help adjusting every time you feed. I adjust to 5.5 and feed with a nutral ph of 7.0 wich gives me a ph of 6.5 to 6.2 and it lasts for a few months and like I said it helps cut down on PH bufers and adjusting every galon of fert. I hand feed my coco grown plants but I think drip system would be best. I feed 1 time aday when lights come on till the point of run off. Coco will hold alot of water their for mixxing it with perlite or grow rocks helps it to dry out faster. You can let it dry out inbetween waterings but if you do it alot it will stress the plant and dry out the root system. I use it in dwc and swc systems also by adding it to the middle of the net pot..grow rocks on the bottom some coco and then add more grow rocks on top it help's with rooting. I also add it to my soil/soiless mixes just a cup to a galon or so of soil/soiless mix it helps with water and nutrient uptake. Coco will hold salts too so flush every few weeks to help cut down the salt build up. Well that's my experiences so far hope that helps ya some... |

Coco is made from coconut husks a replenishable source with literally no environmental impact (ie-You don't kill other plants to make it) and it is virtually inert. It does hold water and soluble nutrients well while maintaining air flow through the medium. It is also known as Coir. Canna is one of a few companies who makes it. Sold as a loose medium or in various compressed blocks. I use a soilless mix that is roughly 40% Coco 40% Perlite 20%Worm castings. I feed with guano teas and an occasional top dress. I recommend the use of a kelp/seaweed based additive (I use Thrive Alive B-1 Organic) and a Mycorrhizae Innoculant (especially If the coco was sterilized). PH and salts aren't too much of a concern when proper watering/feeding/flushing cycles are maintained. Used coco is eco friendly and can be used as a mulch around outdoor plants or tilled into the outdoor garden soil. They make coco based cubes and root pots as well for you hard core hydro heads. Works great in a flood and drain but it doesn't wick as well as rockwool in those drip systems but I hear that is getting worked out.

I have noticed a much better medium than Pro-mix, soil, or any other substrate that I have tried. I have experimented with it and find exactly what Yourhighness and syko2 have stated. I find it to be simply awesome! I mix about 60% Coco to 40% Hydroton. However, I am thinking of maybe trying 30% silica stone mixed with 50% coco and 20% worm castings, just from what I see.
I handwater with a light full nute mix, once a day to run-off. Every week or two you should flush with ph water. I am also thinking about doing it in a DWC/Bio hydro setup. Now, I use straight Hydroton, but have ben told by friends to do it with half Coco mixed in net pots, as syko2 as said. It will yeild much better than straight hydroton, once dialed in to a happy feeding schedule. |

Canna coco?
I have tried. my advice. do not waste your money. Use fresh made soil at bottom of good compost heap. Microwave full power 15-20minutes. let cool then watch them go like you never seen before.
