Anyone else allergic to certain strains?

In 1994 I had my first breakout of hives after smoking some seeded Mexican brick. At that time I didn't realize it was from smoking. The hives were golf ball size and painful as well as itchy. I didn't get the hives again until 1996 after smoking more Mexican brick. Not all Mexican brick gave me hives. I continued to get hives every couple of years. I never knew why until 7 years ago when I went to a specialist. Even some of my organic meds would give me hives.

I spent last night in the hospital with more than 50 giant hives after smoking some of my organic powerplant. My forehead was so big that I couldn't wear my hat. Golfball size hives. My testicles were the size of a orange and I had hives in my throat. I'm currently on steroids and they have gotten much smaller.

I'm wondering if anyone else has got these hives from cannabis. The weird thing that I'm noticing is that only my seeded powerplant is giving me hives but not the non seeded powerplant from the same Mom.

I cannot narrow down to specific strain, but I'd say I am allergic to fresh terpines or whatever in growing cannabis plants.

Trimming is a nightmare.. rash when in contact with plants. Nose turns into a firehose, watering eyes, and if I do not wear a dust mask I'll feel it in my chest... a wheezing sounds and tight chest.

I can smoke/vap no problem however..
Sometimes grinding up bud will make me sneeze, but nothing to the scale of harvest time.

It truly sucks.

I can't smoke anything with the slightest bit of mold in it cuz it messes with my lungs (copd ) & the diesels will have me grabbing an inhaler every now & then . but other than that i can smoke just about anything .

are you sure its not male pollen that you are allergic to?

All my other stains that I pollenated with the same pollen give me no hives. I've sat in a room with 10 four foot males and pollen everywhere and got no hives. The powerplant is the only strain that is giving me hives.

I am allergic to cannabis; all strains, as far as I know.

If I touch any part of the plant and then my eyes, they will itch badly; break up bud then scratch myself with my fingernail, it will swell.

The more plant matter I am exposed to the worse it is; I limit edibles to those derived from extracts, and I vape rather than smoke. I broke out in hives once after eating a bunch of ganja leaves, but in retrospect it could also have been bee pollen I tried from a new area.

GMT, good observation, I cannot vape male flowers because the male pollen in particular causes me headaches, sneezing, and uncontrollable runny nose / tears for a while.

I'm allergic to my cat and I still keep her...

Same as you FF. When I play with my girls I get welts and smal lumps like mosquito bites all over my arms...yet nothing on the hands. If I touch any buds and then touch my eyes I'm fucked!!! Itchy eyes...runny nose...asthma...sneezing. But I can smoke everything with no dramas.

I guess I'm not the only one who is allergic to some cannabis. Maybe people here can name the strains that they are allergic to and see if we can figure out why some strains are OK for us and some are not. The only strain that I can say that I can't smoke or be around is Powerplant.

If all other factors are the same between previous batches and the powerplant, you are likely reacting to a specific terpene(s) in this cross, and would be advised to avoid plants further down the line genetically as a matter of precaution.

Terpenes have amazingly variant qualities, our lovely plant Cannabis can produce terpenes normally found in fruits, flowers, etc, if you have any other allergies, a bit of research can tell you whether any of the compounds present in your other allergy triggers might also be produced in certain kinds of Cannabis.

My cheese gives people allergies when she's drying.. My ol' girl quite had quite a violent reaction to it one night while sleeping in the same room where it was drying. I have for sure seen other strains doing similar when cut. To cure it though use a tea of reishi mushroom or take an extract daily. This solved the problem for us and for friends of mine. It has natural side-effect free sterols, anti-inflammatories and loads of other compounds that modulate your histamine system.

Hey man same here, i get a bad rash when i get in contact with fresh plants.

Trimming is a nightmare i get bad asthma attacks and lay awake wheezing all night. Im gonna get a fullface mask for the next run and hope it helps. I tried one of those smaller masks which dont cover the entire face and it only delayed the asthmas.

What kind of mask are you using?

Like you i have no problem smoking/vaping (thx god!).

Yes sour bubble my keeper cut. Anywhere it touches it turns red, especially my neck/face area. The leaves mostl are what is responsible. A couple times trimming it in a smallish room I couldn't breath so good.

Thanks for all the info on here. Was curious about this and did a search. Seems it doesn't trigger for all people either.

As other people have already stated, I believe it is the terpenes that are the likely culprit. I know there was even a few articles about this in some medical journals. Thankfully I only have mild skin reaction to a topically used concentrate used for experimenting with killing 'bad' moles (aka melanoma).

Haven't reacted in this way to weed before, however the past 2 years in a row, the first day I've spent outside for more than 2hrs while smoking weed after my summer charter vacation, I've gotten sun rash for some reason. Only the first day after a charter vacation, otherwise i've never had it before, and it only happens when i smoke weed.

First time was some strain called White Zombie, second time was the same maroccan hash that I've smoked daily for more than a year.

I'm currently using this mask from home depot. $30
My eyes are pretty good so long as I dont touch them or disrupt my sinus. My girl however gets the burning eyes, etc regardless of if she touches them or not. She wears safety glasses now, but still complains of burning eyes shortly into trim time.

Seems to do the trick, but sucks because I cannot talk or really breathe freely. Worth it though so that I'm not paying for it a few hours into the harvest.

I've had a lot of success with smaller dust masks.. 3m carbon ones and similar brands a notch above just your regular old mask.. They are more comfortable, but a lot of times I end up contaminating them or something and still feel the effects.

I'm back to the mask above as to not take any chances. I'd love to hear more regarding others people have tried or have success with. I've also tried taking antihistamine, but not really sure if it does anything. Benadryl literally knocks me out sleeping..

I use a trimpro rotor for everything but my large nice tops..it works and keeps me from struggling through it all, but it'd be nice to sit down and be able to trim and enjoy harvesting the fruits of my labor without being completely miserable.

I will say.. this is something that is relatively new to me over the past few years. I've been at it for nearly 10 years (a bit smaller scale in years past) and never had these issues. This is an allergy or something that has developed over time.

I'm not too experienced with edibles, but now I'm wondering if they will cause havoc. I've been so blasted off of a brownie once that I've had to go to bed because my vision went out (really really blurry), but I was good the next morning and just assumed I had my fair share of a dose. I'll be very cautious eating if I ever partake again to see if anything causes trouble allergy related....outside of just being really really high.

I would just like to add that even after a few days of not smoking meds that I'm allergic to, I still break out into hives without smoking. What I mean is the smoke that got left in the house, on the walls, floor, etc, still gives me hives. I'm not sure if turpenes get left behind after a few days of not smoking but I still break out without opening jars and no plants in the same house.
