ELLENSBURG — In the predawn hours of Tuesday, authorities raided a marijuana grow in Manastash Canyon, seizing 13,500 plants, according the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office.
The plants had a street value of more than $10 million dollars making it the largest such seizure in county history, Sheriff Gene Dana said in a news release issued Wednesday.
The operation was discovered during an investigation involving the sheriff’s office, the state Department of Resources and the Marijuana Eradication Team, which is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration and managed by Washington State Patrol.
The site was located on state Department of Natural Resource
land in Manastash Canyon, which is about 10 miles west of Ellensburg.
Law enforcement officers found clothing, camping equipment and food at the site, but no suspects.
"We have leads," Undersheriff Clay Myers said in a telephone interview.
Many elements of the grow — the irrigation system, terracing and supplies, among others — are consistent with operations connected to Mexican drug trafficking organizations, Myers said.
"It’s one piece of a very large puzzle that’s all across the Pacific Northwest," he said.
Plants, growing supplies and trash were removed by the officers.
According to a recent study by the American Civil Liberties
Union, Kittitas County has spent $5.3 million enforcing marijuana laws from 2000 to 2010. Those costs involved funding for law enforcement, courts and jail. Statewide, the ACLU estimates a total of $211 million during the same time period.
