Bleaching - how long does it take to happen?
I'm trying to dial in the correct height for my new LED lights.
How long should I wait at each closer interval to see signs of bleaching? Does it happen in hours or days? Would it be considered true that the best height is the one that covers all the leaves equally as possible and is *just* outside the range of bleaching? |

Yes just outside of bleaching should be the best height.
For me bleaching takes a bout a day and you will see it first on new growth. Sidd

I would assume it comes down to your led light angles as far as the intensity goes and different companies use different angles from 60 degrees to 120 degrees. I can see the 60's bleaching faster than the 120's for example.
Also if you get any water spray etc on your leaves you can think it is bleaching but rather a magnification issue with the drops versus light intensity.

great question.. I don't have the answer.. not sure many of us work on hours.. as were working with months here..
one thing to keep in mind, if stretch is not fully done, your gonna have the plant creep up to the light source.. I would say a safe distance is 12 inches to start.. if there's some bleach just pull up the light, no biggie though, so some of the tops have a little white to them. and when its dried it's funny to look at your question, it would be considered true to cover all plant tops / space evenly as possible.. but then in a case when you don't utilize all space or a room / tent, then wanting max light penetration is best.. |

What? You think it takes *months* to bleach plants if they are too close to the light and not hours? That seems to run contrary to what others are saying.

There are factors to consider, obviously. I have noticed that it is definitely more likely to occur with newer/younger growth. to your second question: Yes. |

Yea, how bad is bleeching? It cant be good! I had some plants get bleeched but the nugs are hard as a rock. Im flowering so I think I destroyed the bud stretch, but they are very dense and sticky icky. Im wondering how much quality and quantity can be effected though. The plants didnt show any stress aside from lightening up in my case

Just an update for any future readers wondering about this: I ended up getting bleaching but only weeks into a grow without having moved the light. Bleaching did not occur right away and when it finally did it was only at the very tip of the topmost bud.
I suspect but am not certain that what happened is as the plant aged and got nearer to it's senescence period (turning color, leaves falling off etc) it started losing chlorophyll and the leaves get lighter which, in my theory anyway, causes them to have less protection from bleaching. |
