How's everyone doing at ICmag today? I've been a longtime lurker but this will be one of my first posts on this forum in a looong time, I spent my early years on OG and have expanded my resource base to a few other forums out there since.

I've been growing for about 7-8 years at this point, for years just whatever bagseed I could get but now I'm rocking some Divine Genetics as well as some Alien gear, couldn't be happier.

Today I pose a simple (haha, nothings simple with growing, right?) question about the Pro Grow series of LEDs from Hydroponics Hut https://www.hydroponicshut.com/pro-gr...ow-lights.html.

I'm looking at getting one or possibly two of their lamps but can't decide on what route to go, maybe some IC insight might help.

I run a 2x2 SJ tent, normally with a 400 watt switchable and I have a veg/clone tent running a 4 tube PL-L from HTG. Temps are just unmanageable in the tent with the 400 but those harvest #'s are undeniable. I'm very interested in the Pro Grow 400 with an advertised actual draw of 240 watts at $579. However, I could also purchase 2 of the Pro Grow 180's with an advertised draw of 160watts (this has been seen as 150 watts on a kill-a-watt meter) at $289 a piece with their "bulk" purchase deal adding up to $578 for 300-320 actual draw wattage.

Now, does anyone have any experience with one or both of these lamps and if you do, or even if not, can you offer any help in what should sway my decision?

My concern is the lack of heat sink noticeable on the second picture down on the 400. It looks like its just a flat sheet and not finned. I had a blackstar 500 (240w actual draw) burn out a strip of diodes and had to get it replaced. I feel it was related to the poor thermal management.

meaning they made it cheaper so it is more affordable (easier to sell you on $700 than $1000)


a 2x2 is a small area, should be easy to cover. I'm still waiting to see what the advanced led xml could do, it has a core of 2.5x2.5 @ 135 watts for $549. Pretty much every LED dealer will give you a discount if you call or email, especially if you order more than one.

I'm currently testing LED'S from growblu.com and I agree that heatsink is very important. This company is still in beta phase as they are having various growers test out their l e d's for spectrum testing etc.

It seems that most companies are getting their lights from the same manufacturers for the most part minus the USA ones that make their own. Now it also seems that each one uses their own spectrums etc but many seem to just use what others use.

The issue is that unlike hps, the leds have a ton of variables to them and each company it seems adds even more of those variables to the entire picture IF they change or modify the spectrums, wavelengths etc.

I think you should go with 2 lights versus 1 if that is your main question. It will help with penetration and overall light spread.

Ditto to that...no experience with those lights, they look interesting though...and at that price if they crap out after a few rounds you will still be under warranty. After the warranty they will have paid for themselves a few times over.

But to reiterate...more sources of light!! The more the merrier! It's not HPS, you want multiple sources of light to cover your canopy. Don't listen to the manufacturers about coverage areas. They're full of it.

Your wattage concept seems right on...75% of the way to your current HPS should give you results you'll be happy with from LED.
