Is it possible to tell what a strain name is if you just got it with your weed one day??

NO.

but yr question reminds me of a Cheech and Chong skit. in the skit Sergeant Stedenko of the DEA visits the catholic school where C and C are pupils ... and he shows the boys some dope so that they'll know what to stay away from if some dastardly drug dealer ever offers them some.

the Sergeant doesn't understand that these ghetto boys have grown up with dope and that they in turn have misunderstood his question. they KNOW it's dope and think he's asking what strain or variety it is!

so the boys immediately identify it as mexican and begin to argue whether it Michuacan, or something else or something else ... can't remember nowadays ... and that's not because I 've smoked dope for a long time ... it's because it HAS been a long time. anyway the schoolboys know MUCH more about dope than Sergeant Stedenko.

the Cheech and Chong skit was part of an LP (Y'know, those big round black plastic things) issued in the 70's.

Oh, yeah ... smoking is a SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE. only the smoker knows what it's like and the smoker's experience cannot be communicated accurately. (OK, so now all you Kush smokers will want to argue that, won't you ...)

PS. it's a few minutes later ... and y'know, just to contradict myself and confuse the reader thoroughly ... I seem to recall ... thru the mists of time ... that a local fellow I was sharing a joint of my gear with many years ago ... after he had taken a cuppla drags ... said: 'Aha! that's where it came from. it came from YOU!' pointing to me he said he'd bought a deal in a nearby town and recognised the joint we were having together as the same gear he'd bought. (disclaimer: this tale belongs to a time when I may or may not have done many illegal things and it should not be construed from this story that I do any such thing today)

so that pretty well fucks up almost evrything I 've said above doesn't it? Oh well ...

No if anything that P.S you wrote pretty much reiterates your view of it being subjective as it was still the same for him when he smoked it with you as it was when he bought it next town over......

It is possible with some strains which are quite distinctive in flavour and appearance, especially if it is an homogenous plant. And more so if you have a connection to the plant. For example, Flying Dutchmens The Pure.
