Were do ya'll get your grow gear from I've looked into growlush(that eBay shyte) but every thread I read talks about their poor quality and their ballast blowing after a few weeks....

Have a look into Indoor Elements and Secret Jardin tents (GrowLush are shite) on the aussie e-bay, the e-bay stores on there will be able to supply you with everything you need, some of the e-bay stores have actual physical store fronts you can visit if you live in the area.
You can also visit your local hydro store as well and compare prices with the e-bay stores or google some hydro stores in your next state(if you don't want to visit your local stores) and give them a ring about prices and especially shipping costs.
Try to get a safe address to have your new hardware sent to, not to the place where you'll be growing, leave as little as possible paper/digital trail back to you(actual name) address etc and you should be sweet as mate

The last time I went to a hydro store a police car was out the front. So I went to Bunnings instead, got a snag at the BBQ out the front and drove home.

A 2 hour drive for a snag.

That helps thanks boom, so eBay ok but grow lush shite as i had figured. I don't feel comfortable at my local hydro store there's never anyone in there and the owner just stares at you as you browse, and when I asked him about growing certain kinds of vegies he said rather suspiciously " I don't grow vegies" and it just seemed like he was trying to bait me, or being to obvious as to his activities either way not someone i want to associate with.

When I used to live in Melbourne there was a hydro store set up in a large retail nursery. You would be surprised by how many people are using hydro for growing normal things. Hydroponics is not illegal. Every time I went there it was busy and I'm pretty sure they were not growing the same plants as me. But the store had everything I needed.

I'm just trying to give you some more options to think about, it sounds like your local store is out of the question which can be a good thing as it keeps you out of the local eyes.
What High Country said about Bunnings is true you can get alot of what you need from there too except the specialist hardware like carbon filters and inline fans, they will have to be bought online or a store in the next big town or state. I avoid my local hydro stores like the plague especially after SA changed it's laws regarding bulbs, light hoods and carbon filters making them into prescribed equipment meaning you have to show 100 points of ID to buy them and your details go on the cop database, so you better have a good reason to be buying these items cause the cops will come and suss you out and want to see the equipment
So I have to travel/order outta state for hardware like that.
