Eyes in the forest
https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/forest...-1226426142151
TROUBLEMAKERS in the state's rich forests have been warned: "little brother" is watching. A network of tiny infra-red spy cameras has nabbed more than 50 timber thieves, vandals and illegal dumpers in the past two years throughout the South-East's vast timber forests. Forestry SA ranger Mark Whan said new improved super-sensitive spy cameras had been trialled in recent weeks with almost immediate results. "We just got new cameras and the technology just gets better and better - the new ones don't emit light and can pick up car registrations and in the past week we have had some great results from them," he said. Mr Whan said the spy camera network was targeted at vandalism and illegal dumping hot spots such as the cavernous sinkhole known as Hells Hole, south of Mt Gambier. "It is certainly the talk of the town, it has led to more people being caught doing the wrong thing from previous years and it has helped us to develop patterns of where illegal activity is most common," he said. "The big problem has been illegal clearance and cutting down and taking of firewood, vandalism in recreational areas after dark and illegal dumping." He said the cameras had allowed Forestry SA to crack down on many more people than would have been possible than with inspectors driving through the millions of hectares of state forests in the region. "Here in the South-East we have a fairly low rate of people using the forests for recreation and it seems that most of those going into the forests at night are there for some kind of wrongdoing," Mr Whan said. "We still encourage people to use the forests for recreation and if they are unsure about what they can and cannot do they should give us a call to check." ---------------- Be careful out there. If they are doing it in South OZ they will be doing it everywhere. |

I have mixed feelings about this. Good to see illegal dumpers, timber thieves e.t.c get caught, but geez bloody big brother everywhere.
![]() And the implications for growers are obvious... |

I saw on TV last year where the cops were tipped off about a crop and they placed a couple off cameras around and wound up catching the fella red handed..my view on this is you fight fire with fire,if I were going to grow in the bush I would consider placing a few cameras off my own

friend of mine dumps the dumpster at the Bureau of Land Mgmt. field office 20 miles East of where I live.....Last month he dumped the empty case boxes of three cases of "game-cams". Could be biologist activity, or could be big brother, but there damn sure are 36 more cameras out there taking pictures of SOMETHING. I agree that there are some unlawful activities that should be controlled goin' on on PUBLIC lands...but it just don't feel right knowing yer being watched. -And the times they are a'changing-
